Good material, is taking us much longer than 40 minutes tho

I am currently using this book for a study at home with my husband, two daughters (teens) and a good friend. We are all in varying places of spiritual development and maturity so it has been interesting to hear the different opinions on the depth of the material. Those of us who have been following Christ for awhile have heard the scriptures used in the book many times and so the concepts presented sometimes seem basic. However, my youngest daughter (15) feels it is way over her head. And even for those of us who have heard it before, we have learned things we did not know and of couse, even reminders are always beneficial because who among us has actually mastered what it means to be a disciple? :-)

It has been taking us closer to 90 minutes to complete each week's material. I definitely recommend the book but someone does need to be appointed as a facilitator. The facilitator should read ahead of the group each week and be prepared to guide the conversation. (and that is recommended in the book - good advice!) We have not been doing that prior to this week and I think that is why it is taking so long. Plus the facilitator is then prepared to help those in the group who may have less Bible knowledge or understanding of theology and also challenge those in the group who give the "Sunday school response" to go deeper in their answers to the discussion questions.

I bought this book hoping to introduce those closest to me to inductive Bible study which Kay Arthur is a huge proponent of. I'm not sure it has really accomplished that goal but what it has done is to make us really think and contemplate on what it means to be a follower of Jesus. What is the true cost? How do we know if we or others are truly followers? What has Christ promised His disciples? What has Christ commanded of His disciples? These are the types of questions that will be answered through this study.

The beauty of inductive Bible study is to teach people how to interpret God's word for themselves. Because of the book's stated purpose of moving through the material in 40 minutes and no homework, questions are slanted to lead participants to the "answers" rather than guiding them through a process of self-discovery. I am hoping to eventually move our intimate house study group into something that has a self-study component (homework) so that they can really begin to see how inductive study works. Unfortunately this type of study just can't accomplish that. We did like it enough to move on to another of the 40-minute studies for our next session. We'll be ordering the one on effective prayer.

So ultimately it depends on what you want to accomplish in your group as to whether or not this book would be a good fit. If no homework and a limited amount of time to work through the study are important then give it a try. If your group desires something deeper and you feel that they will commit to homework then I would look elsewhere. Kay Arthur and many other wonderful teachers have other books that incorporate individual and group study. I feel that type of material is the most effective for spiritual growth within a group setting.

In this study, Kay Arthur cuts to the heart and makes you evaluate how committed you are as a Christian. Don't buy this unless you are ready to do some soul-searching.

Good study material

I am doing a Bible study with two of my friends and we do not have a lot of time to spend. What this study does is focus on the subject. We spend the time on the study part and that gives us more time to spend on our fellowship and prayer portions. It is not that we don't want to spend more time studying, but that with our schedules, we only have a limited time for it with each other. I would recommend this for a good study with the people wanting to have a varied time together, studying, praying, fellowshipping. A great tool.

About the Author
Myron Sharaf was a patient, student, and assistant of Wilhelm Reich's between 1948 and 1954. He currently teaches in the Department of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, practices psychotherapy in the Boston area, and gives lectures and workshops in this country and in Europe.

An Astonishing Biography

This has to be one of the best biographies ever written. It is certainly the best ever written about Reich. You will not be able to put it down or forget it after you've read it. The effort that went into presenting all of the aspects of Reich's life and work is staggering. That extraordinary flame of humanity, Willhelm Reich, is presented here as never before. Bravo!

Doesn't Seem Objective, Despite Excruciating Care to Be Just That

I want to say at the outset that the body- and character- based therapy started by Reich has changed my life and pleasure like nothing else has. I am grateful, and surely he was a genius and also courageous....

Psychotherapy is almost entirely composed of 'very nice' (as in reaction formation against repressed anger) people, both on the receiving end (patients) and the sending end (therapists). Sometimes it takes a 'not nice' (straight-forward) person like Reich to make it all effective. In character analysis terms most therapists are oral characters (looking for nurturance and an idealized perfect parent), and Reich was a psychopathic character (which is the one character type type Reich himself never explored!) If one reads Ilse Ollendorf's biography of Reich Wilhelm Reich: A Personal Biography, the difficult details of his narcissistic traits are there (double standards, jealousy, dominance, wife-beating, avoiding financial obligations, yet being generous where it would make a show etc..) even though she does tries to justify it with his genius. Sharaf though, goes to great complicated apologistic length to portray Reich as someone to whom usual standards can't apply. perhaps the usual yardsticks don't apply, but I think the usual standards of justice and fairness should apply to him. It does seem however that Reich had enough of a self-reflective process to avoid being as exploitative as his character type often is.

No other book on Reich gives so much detail. But this book does not give any clear picture of how Reich was like to spend time with. That usually indicates that those around him were blinded in some way...

Extraordinary man, extraordinary mind

I met Myron Sharaf when I was researching my own book about Wilhelm Reich, which ultimately became a novel, "The All Souls' Waiting Room." I was trying to piece together fragments of my childhood lived under Reich's shadow and Sharaf's biography helped me enormously. Sharaf's objectivism and compassion for Reich reached super-human levels because the latter had an affair with Sharaf's wife that ultimately destroyed their marriage. I can imagine no greater homage to a great man than that his biographer still seeks the truth of a person's life in spite of enormous psychic pain.

When Hank Williams died in the backseat of a car at age 29, he left behind grieving fans, friends and family, as well as eight guns, eight pairs of boots, 11 hats and a saddle. Hank Williams: Snapshots from the Lost Highway by Colin Escott and Kira Florita gathers together just about every last piece of paper having anything do to with country music's greatest and most tragic star (hence the postmortem inventory). Although he never made it to 30 and died nearly a half-century ago, singer/songwriter Hank Williams continues to exert tremendous influence on all spheres of popular music. The country crooner also continues to invite biographical treatment. In 1998, music historian Escott (Hank Williams: A Biography) and Florita, former marketer of the Hank Williams catalog for Mercury Records Nashville, produced the Grammy-winning, ten-CD set The Complete Hank Williams. While working on that project, they amassed a huge number of photographs, documents, and published and unpublished song lyrics. That iconography forms the basis of Hank Williams: Snapshots from the Lost Highway, an appealing coffee-table book that is being cross-promoted with the tribute album, Timeless. Composed of captions by the authors and excerpts of interviews with Williams and his family and friends, the text is somewhat sparse but to the point and well written. Rick Bragg also contributes an elegant foreword. Koon's Hank Williams, So Lonesome was first published as Hank Williams: A Bio-Bibliography (Greenwood, 1993). This second take features expanded biographical coverage and important discussions of Williams's songs. Also significant are the author's attempts to separate the facts of Williams's life and work from the mythology of the musician and his thoughtful assessment of sources. In eliminating the reference-book qualities of the earlier Greenwood volume, Koons has made a significant contribution to Williams literature for fans and scholars. As a pair, these books nearly perfectly complement each other, but, unfortunately, neither contains a discography. In addition, the Escott and Florita volume lacks a bibliography (perfectly acceptable for a work of this kind), and the Koons book contains only a scaled-back one. Despite these shortcomings, both books avoid sensationalizing their complex subject and are highly recommended for public libraries and academic libraries with a popular culture focus. James E. Eventually, she sold Stuart her memorabilia and manuscripts concerning her brother. Escott, author of the award-winning Hank Williams: A Biography (1995), and Florita, Escott's partner in producing the multiple-award-winning 10-CD set The Complete Hank Williams, explain that only a few photos of Williams have been used and reused on recording packages and in the media and that Stuart obtained an exponentially larger number of pictures, nearly all previously unpublished. Hank's Hidden Treasures!

If it was 25 pages longer, I would have given "Snapshots" five stars! It's a wonderful treasure trove of fascinating, previously unseen photos, interviews, first person narratives and long-lost song lyrics. If you're a Hank Williams fan, you know what an impressive researcher is Colin Escott. His earlier bio of Hank stands as the most complete picture we're likely to have of a singer who, almost without fail, gave complete heart and soul in the recording studio. Finally, we have a book that attempts far more than a grim post-mortem on Hank's well-documented personal miseries. This is a celebration of Hank Williams: musician and performer. Wait until you see all the incredible photos of Hank and the Drifting Cowboys on stage, playing to excited, packed houses in places as far flung as San Jose and Ottawa. By all accounts, Hank was the most charismatic live performer of his time. Many of the hand-written scraps of unpublished song lyrics are very moving, especially "I Wish I Had A Dad." If only Hank had been given enough time to put the words to music and record them, his string of classic hits would have, without doubt, continued. I am not a starry-eyed admirer. I realize that Hank was abusive to his wives, often cruel and secretive. (By the way, photos here show what a teenaged knock-out was Hank's second wife, Billie Jean.) The "hillbilly Shakespeare" lived most of his brief adult life as a tortured, late-stage alcoholic. But "Snapshots" takes care to balance the picture, too. It depicts Hank Williams as millions of record-buying fans saw him: an enomorously gifted singer/songwriter and electrifying showman. I hope that Colin Escott and Kira Florita keep searching for hidden treasures: "More Snapshots From The Lost Highway" would be welcomed by this reader! Also needed is a single volume that details (as much as possible) all of Hank's live perfomances, TV and radio appearances, such as Mark Lewisohn's "Complete Beatles Chronicle" and the book on Elvis' live perfomances, "King On The Road." Please buy "Hank Williams: The Original Singles Collection...Plus" (CD), Escott's biography and "Snapshots From The Lost Highway." Escott and Florita are "settin' the woods on fire"!

I received this book yesterday and already have spent two hours reading the text and salivating over the rooms featured! Not only does this book contain beautiful photos but it is definitely worth the read - Celerie Kemble adds such a personal touch. It is truly a pleasure (and escape) to read.

It would be easy to dismiss Celerie Kemble. First off, her name is Celerie. Then there's her privileged childhood in Palm Beach, and the fact that she joined an interior design firm founded by her mother. But that would mean missing out on the talent that put her at the forefront of a new group of society designers and that is evident throughout "Celerie Kemble: To Your Taste" ($45; Clarkson Potter). A tiny nine-point font was used to fit all her advice into the 256-page volume, which shows, step by step, how to design rooms that are elegant and personal. It isn't often a decorating book includes a tribute to artisans and an apologia, but these sections, along with what must be Ms. Kemble's genetic predisposition toward humor (her mother named her Celerie, after all), are what make the book so engaging.

Pierre Levy takes a fresh look at the whole idea of what is virtual. He's responding to the widespread belief, and sometimes even panic, that a digital society with emphasis on virtual interactions is necessarily depersonalizing. He takes particular exception to the notion that "virtual" and "real" are opposites. Instead, Levy argues that virtuality is one of four modes of existence, the rest of which he describes as reality, possibility, and actuality. Each is defined in terms of its relationship with its environment.

In following Levy's world view, you may find that he interprets some or all of those terms in ways you're not used to, but the result is an interesting new approach to what it means to be part of an increasingly digital world. He examines the virtualization of several elements our society: the corporal body, text, the economy, language, technology, contracts, intelligence, subjects, and objects. What he finds is not a destruction of the personal so much as a transformation. Virtualization adds to, but does not replace, the real, the possible, and the actual. By understanding what virtualization means and involves, Levy believes that society will gain a greater variety of options for interaction in all areas. Virtually incomprehensible

This book is extremely heavy on the esoteric, philosophical lingo. As a virtual environment systems designer, I found it to be essentially useless. My guess is that it would be of value only to academicians and others not directly involved in the technological aspects of VE and other digital domains. Although I suspect there might have been some useful stuff here, the writing is too tangled to unravel. If you speak academese, you might fare better than I did.

A Must-Read

The word 'virtual' has had a fair amount of exercise in the last few decades, and it would be a pity if some were put off reading this wonderful book due to the misguided belief it may be populated with computer lingo and people with wetware engaged in simulated 'virtual' sex. Levy's understanding of the virtual extends far beyond information technology; he gives the concept a proper philosophical and even anthropological foundation, and even goes so far as to show that we have in fact always been virtual, and this is what has made us human.
Technology is probably what separates us from all other living creatures, or at least sophisticated technology, such as machines. Yes, other organisms utilise simple tools and what have you, but none of them are going to the moon in any sort of hurry. Levy's work is essentially about artifacts, be they software like language or symbols, or hardware like tools and machines. However, following on from the work of philosophers such as Deleuze and Serres, Levy is profoundly against the two common (mis)conceptions about them: that they 'dominate' us, or that they are simple tools in our hands, doing our bidding. Heidegger and his ilk were very keen on the domination idea, but that's only because they didn't really understand machines; sure, your VCR will seem to dominate you, if you can't work it, as many older people will tell you, but after a good dose of swearing and fumbling the usual result is a machine that just sits there doing nothing. Hardly despotism. Or you may have its measure, and say it's just a tool for capturing video images, for whatever purpose, and yet it changes the way you watch TV, capture memories of your kids, and the entire institutional set-up of the film industry. Quite a clever tool, that.
If you read this book (and you should), Levy will tell you that all artifacts, including less 'material' ones like language, virtualise our lives. That doesn't mean making them less real, the common usage of 'virtual'; it means problematising them, opening them up to possibilities. Making them MORE real. And this isn't naive techno-optimism, because not only are not all these possibilities not nice, but when you virtualise something you take on-board the requirements of the virtualising medium, which have to be met to keep it running, and you become entwined with the other people associated with these artifacts, such as video repair men. Technology can truly make you feel like a god, but it always needs to be fixed, and you have to undertake profound social relationships for it to happen at all (nobody builds an aircraft carrier alone in their backyard). Or take our oldest and most 'simple' artifact: language. Language, says Levy, virtualises 'real-time', by which he means our everyday interactions with other people. That's what it means to 'discuss' something, you take an immediate issue confronting two or more people, and you use language to open it up to different resolution paths which aren't immediately obvious. And again, this isn't artifact as god or slave: the language doesn't dominate you, although it has in-built constraints which you must adhere to if you want to be understood, and you can't just tell people what to do and see it happen, because not only are allowed meanings consensual or social, but also there is no direct causal link between utterance and action.
Levy explores the way we virtualise every aspect of our lives, from real-time interaction through language, to our actions through technology, and our social relations through institutions. And in each case the mechanism is the same: we create some artifact, more or less material, which allows us to shift what's at stake away from the immediate here-and-now and towards a problematic where new possibilities open up. And again Levy avoids simplistic determinism of any persuasion by emphasising that each of these artifacts simultaneously creates new social arrangements, and introduces new imperatives through the need for their upkeep. This is how the philosophy becomes anthropology, and why Levy says to be human IS to be virtual; it is our species that has taken these artifacts into our collectives, that has used the world to mediate our social lives. And the world extracts a price too, because artifacts impose requirements back upon us, if we want them to keep working, that is. The end of domination, either of artifact by human, or human by artifact.
This is Levy's most accessible book, in English, relatively free of the sometimes over-blown prose of Collective Intelligence. Like Bruno Latour, also an admirer of Serres and Deleuze, Levy allows us to see exactly how our technological, modern world is every bit as religious, barbaric, enlightened, enchanted, mystical or whatever as it has always been; you just have to understand artifacts. (It is also a tremendous asset for philosophy students who don't fully understand the scope of the Begsonian/Deleuzean 'virtual'.)
And as another reviewer has hinted, there's even theology in nuts and bolts, if you know where to look.

This is one of those rare books that will re-wire many minds. Lévy gives us a new way of seeing culture. He achieves this by linking specific cultural activities, and thereby humankind, to a fundamental process that is outside place and time - the process of virtualisation.
That the book produces its profound cognitive effect in so few words is stunning. Part of the credit for this feat must go to the translator, Bononno.
'Becoming Virtual' in my view surpasses that other classic,'Understanding Computers and Cognition' by Winograd and Flores. Lévy depicts cognition and action as both social process, and process occurring within the individual. He introduces concepts sparingly and tellingly, illustrating them with examples reaching from the dawn of the human era to the present day.
A book that can be read at one sitting, but will demand to be picked up again many, many times in the years ahead.

Peltason draws inspiration from folk art sources as varied as quilts, watercolors, and even furniture in this volume of needlepoint projects. Full directions and materials lists are provided, as well as colorful charts and photographs depicting the finished products. These projects aren't just for framing, either—there are paperweights, pillows, curtain tie-backs, and even a door brick. Though directions and information about needlepoint materials, stitches, and finishing are provided, this is for experienced needlepointers looking for classic yet unique patterns and creative, attractive ways to showcase their work. About the Author
RUTH PELTASON runs Bespoke Books, a small book producing company that specializes in books on the cultural arts, including Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry and Kate Spade’s Occasions, Style, and Manners. She has been a hobby needlepointer for a little more than a decade, which, coupled with her interest in the arts, led to the development of this book. She lives in New York City.

KARYN GERHARD has been crafting for more than twenty-five years. Although she has worked in many textile arts, needlepoint has always been her passion, and she has stitched hundreds of pieces in all shapes and sizes, including petit point purses, Christmas stockings, even large, complex tapestries. Karyn Gerhard is an editor of illustrated books in New York.

Lovely and inspiring book of needlepoint based on all kinds of American Folk Art Objects.

Folk art, with its simple lines and bold colors is an outstanding source of ideas for needlepoint. This beautifully produced book takes as its sources all kinds of items from the museum, from hooked rugs to weathervanes and delivers them up as lovely needlepoint.
The projects are mostly stitched in Basketweave, with commonly available threads such as floss, pearl cotton, and Persian wool. This is fantastic because it makes the projects accessible to stitchers everywhere. The reference section at the back of the book has instructions on making all the stitches and a color conversion chart.
The projects, designed by Karyn Gerhard, are divided into five sections: Daily Life, Beasts & Bugs, Flowers, Hearts, and Geometrics. Each section begins with a listing of the projects. The projects each have a picture of the original piece and have the needlepoint photographed in a room setting that showcases more folk art (for even more inspiration). The introduction to each project talks about the project and the other folk art in the setting. Each project also has a material list, information about stiching and finishing it, and some lovely and inventive ideas for variations. That seems like a simple thing, but many books lack it and you can tell from the variations that Ruth and Karyn are needlepointers themselves.
The charts are large and in full color with synbols as well, making them easy to read. The color key not only lists the symbols in the chart with the thread and color number, but it also lists how many skeins are needed. If you want to stitch one of the projects in the book, you can take this and buy everything you need all at once. Another useful, but often neglected item.
Also in this section is extensive information about the objects used as inspiration, additional information about needlepoint, finishing instructions, and a list of sources.
A inspiring book, beautifully produced. I'd love to see more like it.

This is a wonderful book of projects that display folk art designs. The photography is great as are the designs to produce and needlepoint one for yourself.
