Beautiful book

This book, by the mellifluously-named Wanda Wen, is very pretty. Almost every page has a photo of some well-wrapped gift or another; it truly is a joy to simply flip through, absorbing the colours and patterns and shapes. I love wrapping presents, lovely papers, lush ribbons and so have made a point of investigating many books on the subject and here are some of my thoughts on "The Art of Gift Wrapping:"
PROS
- as I've already mentioned, it's pretty!
- there are some examples of how to wrap non-boxed items: wrapping a ball, for example, or a wine bottle or cylinder-shaped gift
- the sophistication level is pretty high (it's quite depressing to look through gift wrapping books when every photo shows a gift wrapped in ugly paper with cheesy ribbon and a hideous card!)
- there are lots of ideas for using items beyond paper, ribbon and tape to beautify a present, including (but not limited to) birch bark, crayon shavings, postage stamps, pebbles and mica flakes
- it celebrates the whole idea of gift wrapping as a both fun (for oneself) and loving (for the gift recipient) rather than as just a way to cover up a present
- this book has a strong, consistent aesthetic. It's not my personal taste (Rich-hippy-meets-Asian-on-the-Left-Coast) but I could absolutely appreciate it and you probably will, too.
CONS
- this book is uneven. I could have done with less than an entire page dedicated to the author's musings on why she likes to use natural elements in her wrapping, or the full page instructions on literally winding a piece of twine around a box 6 times and tying it in a simple bow; there is definitely more explanation and illustration needed of more complex wrapping techniques like the "suspended object tie" or the "diagonal wrap" (both of which I have tried and failed - multiple times - based on the instructions and photos in the book)
- referring to a gift wrapper as a "gift wrap artist" made me snort
- Wen mentions that one of her absolute favourite papers for gift wrap is "wax banana paper." She, ahem, waxes poetic about its "intense, delicious colors" and its "delicate crispness." She convinced me. I want some... I want it baaaad. But, not one of the stores in her book's resource guide sells it... not even her own store, Soolip. And Google "Wax Banana Paper." Yup. The only mention that is found in the entire WWW is taken from her book. So, this paper that she has convinced us is wonderful and lovely is so rare as to not be found anywhere that Google can discover it, or she has called it by name that is not usually used for it: in either case, rather annoying.
All in all, my vote says that this is a good but not great book: a solid 3-star. It's far superior to Carola's "Wrapped with Style" or Hase's "Quck and Easy Enchanted Gifts Wrapping." But I much preferred Roehm's "Presentations" and Birkett's "The Gift Wrapping Book."

A Must-Have Book for those who like chic wrappings

This is a very well explained book, very simple to understand though the wrappings are rather original and very chic. We must not search for the usual and traditional here, it is more unexpected, surprising, elegant, though easy to realize.
The author is very clear in her explanations, no reason to get a headache. She even explains what seems obvious to me. The pictures are amazing, the whole book gorgeous.
I really would say it is a must-have book for those who like wrapping presents in a very chic style. And original also.

I bought this book for my daugher's birthday. She is 31 years old. She loves to wrap presents. She loved the innovative ideas and materials used in wrapping gifts and especially the ideas for none traditional shapes of gifts and ideas on how to wrap them. She said it was the best gift ever.
