A global aquaculture feeds industry has developed and a wide range of specialist feeds is now sold. The new options in feeds and feeding systems, which are becoming available, necessitate continual review by farmers of their feeding policies, where choices must be made as to appropriate feed types and feeding methods. While growth rates and feed conversion values are the prime factors of interest to farmers, other important issues, such as product qualiry and environmental impacts of farm effluents, are also directly related to feed management practices.

Undiscovered Petroleum and Mineral Resources: Assessment and Controversy. Lawrence J. Drew. 210 pp. Plenum Press, 1997. $59.50.
Although most scientists never experience controversies as significant or fights as bitter as those over the assessment of undiscovered mineral resources, all will see parallels to their own professional lives in this story told by Lawrence Drew. Nonscientists will gain an understanding of how the advance of science is constrained by the frailties of scientists and the whims of the environment in which we work. From his perspective as a quantitative geologist at the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Drew interweaves the technical with the human strands to tell of the development of statistical methods for estimating undiscovered earth resources.
Resource assessments are controversial in the political realm because they always offend some special interest. For example, both conventional and unconventional undiscovered natural gas resources were estimated in a 1980 assessment by the USGS. When a new assessment limited to conventional resources was prepared in 1988, it appeared superficially that undiscovered resources had declined by 40 percent. Politicians were not pleased. The American gas industry had lobbied to have both categories of resources estimated. Environmentalists saw natural gas as the carbon-based fuel of choice. And the Reagan administration promoted natural gas as a substitute for imported oil to improve economic and military security. Misreading of the 1988 report and the desire of these interests for a larger resource base resulted in harsh criticism of USGS methods.
Controversy results within the profession because the deterministic mindset of most geologists is challenged by the new statistical methods. Some very vocal and determined deterministic geologists have opposed applying statistical methods to estimating undiscovered metal resources. They believe that deposits cannot be classified into geologically similar groups within which statistical prediction is possible, although the validity of this approach is confirmed by the analyses themselves. Drew observes that geologists are deterministic by nature and training.
A particularly acrimonious dispute is chronicled in the last chapter, "The Charge Was Scientific Fraud." As Drew sees it, an unprofessional attack on statistical assessment methods, particularly by one USGS geologist and National Academy of Sciences member, has been the result of a complex series of events beginning in the late 1970s and continuing today. He details the effects of factors such as a greater emphasis in the USGS on producing products useful in the near term, concern for the environment, actions of nongovernmental organizations, statistical versus deterministic viewpoints, personalities of geologists, management styles and budget constraints. As a result of the attack, a review of statistical assessment methods was made by an outside organization in 1992. It found the methods to be sound and correctly applied.
Although the human aspects will be of interest to more readers, the discussion of technical matters occupies more of the book. Drew does an excellent job of explaining the fundamental concepts without recourse to mathematics. The geometric distribution of field sizes, concepts of field growth and field mortality, and grade-versus-tonnage curves for metallic deposits are clearly explained. Several pilot projects are detailed, as are their roles in the development of the methods. The numerous maps and graphs are easily understood and enhance the text.
Drew's revelation of the human side of the scientific enterprise will be interesting to scientists and an educational experience for anyone unfamiliar with the sometimes unseemly goings-on among scientists. Geologists in particular will find the technical discussion illuminating. This is a well-written and informative book, and that last chapter is a real page turner!

And the 1 Star is for the pictures

It's a shame books can't come with "Hazardous to Your Health" warning labels for Springsteen fans.
As nearly as I can figure, the author used as many anonymous sources as possible, and filled in the blanks with whatever information he could make up. He also obviously kept his Thesaurus close by so he could adhere to the adage: "If you can't dazzle them with facts, baffle them with BS."
True Springsteen needn't waste their money unless they have been advised by their doctor to raise their blood pressure a couple points.

Blunder Road

It's always good to read a Springsteen bio that counterbalances the worshipful works by Dave Marsh, whose objectivity is tainted by his family's long personal relationship with Bruce.
On the up side, this is a warts and all portrait that offers information I haven't read elsewhere. It paints a fuller, more life-like picture than previous books.
On the down side, the author is guilty of gross overwriting and sweeping generalizations. Where one word would do, he uses four or five. I suspect many readers will also have trouble decoding the "Britishisms" that litter every page.
Another negative is the failure to grasp the culture of Asbury Park and Freehold in the 1950s and 1960s. I grew up in this area, a few years behind Bruce, knew this culture firsthand, and saw all his early bands (except the Castilles). The author alternates between being clueless and plain wrong. There were enough factual errors (e.g., Ocean County College is not on Hwy 9, the Stone Pony was not in existence during Bruce's scuffling club days) to make me question the accuracy of the balance of the book.
In short, while this is an interesting addition to my rock-n-roll library, I'm still waiting for the definitive Springsteen biography.

Dismal at best...

I've been an avid and captive listener of Bruce Springsteen's music for about three decades. That said, I'm not above reading a juicy/tell-all tome such as this one that Sandford strived to create.

The problem is, he just doesn't do it well (mercy, he makes Angela Bowie's teall-all book, BACKSTAGE PASSES; LIFE ON THE WILD SIDE WITH DAVID BOWIE, seem like a masterpiece by comaprison).

Being pretty well-grounded and centered as an adult in my forties, I'm a bit beyond the need to have heroes (though I'll be the first to admit that Springsteen was something of a hero to me back when I was in my teens, back in the days when I still was dumb and innocent enough to have heroes in the form of rock stars). So, this book could have revealed that Springsteen spent a chunk of his life slumming around the most seedy places in Time Square...and it really wouldn't diminish the admiration that I have for the fine canon of songs & performances that he's given the world).

So, no, there was no offense taken...nor were my sensibilities shattered... by some of the rumors and theories that Sandford tries to put forth in his book.

The problem with Sandford's book is that its poorly written. I mean, the writing is downright bad. So bad that I'm surprised an editor didn't demand a complete overhaul of this book before allowing it to go to print. This book is laden with vague/obtuse sentences, along with some of the most awkward paragraph constructions that I've ever tried to wade my way through.

To make matters even worse, Sandford clearly has an agenda...and damned if he'll let facts get in the way of his agenda. There's certainly no crime when one tries to take a few feet off of a pedestal. And, really, I'm glad he did this while Springsteen was still alive, rather than after (what I hope will be a far off) death. There's nothing more demonic than the likes of Albert Goldman who've written scathing biographies of folk such as Lenny Bruce, Elvis and John Lennon after they're dead and gone.....and have no way of defending some of his more vile and vitriolic claims on their lives.

In the case of Sandford's book, he does such a poor job of masking his agenda that it's unlikely that a cat such as Springsteen gave a rat's behind about what is contained in these pages. Or, equally as plausible, Springsten...like many others whom I've known who've read this book...may have tossed it aside after a few pages of discovering that Sandford gropes with forming a coherent thought or even a decent sentence structure.

I am always wary of biographers who approach a subject with an agenda. As mentioned, their agenda often tends to ride roughshod over actual facts. That in itself would cause me to encourage folks to steer clear of this book. There are better and more objective biogrpahies about Bruce Springsteen readily available.

But, for those of us who dig a little dirt, Sandford's factual errors....and just plain bad-writing...make this book a trial and a chore to plow through. If one is going to dish out some dirt...and there will ALWAYS be a market for that....then I don't think it's asking too much for an author to get his facts straight and to write it in a style that doesn't read like a shoddy translation into the English language.

In a nutshell, this book is poorly researched and poorly written. Really, if one is looking for dirt on Springsteen, then hunt down the article that appeared in ESQUIRE magazine some years back. At least that piece is well-written.

This book is nothing less than a hack-job.

Although the recipes in Saran's aptly titled second cookbook share no unifying principle apart from their deliciousness—whoever heard of Macaroni and Cheese keeping company with Mushroom and Rice Biryani Casserole?—they complement one another in a mysterious way. Such eclecticism reflects how Saran, chef and co-owner of Dévi in New York City, cooks for his family and enormous circle of Tupperware-toting friends. Unlike many other chefs' signature dishes, which originate in a restaurant kitchen, Saran's most inspired creations begin at home. When this cooking-without-borders approach succeeds, as it mostly does, the results taste like wild siblings of the original: bolder, stronger, deeper. American Masala enriches my family's masala!

American Masala has enriched the masala of my family in wonderful ways. My sister, Gail, who is a good cook but never takes the time, was given American Masala by my niece. Gail was so inspired by by the photos in the cookbook, that she came early to my house on Easter to prepare the corn bread and the red potatoes. The three of us had a memorable time preparing those dishes - it was the first I had ever seen my niece cook! I was their sous chef and loved every minute of it.
Then, and perhaps best of all, the fussy eaters in the family would not stay out of the potatoes until dinner! Even my mother, who hates richly flavored foods, loved both dishes. My heart sang, as the reason I ever took up a wooden spoon was total boredom with my mother's WASPy efforts in the kitchen.
All this totally reinforces a point I always talk about on my cooking show - that food and the kitchen are where many special family memories are cooked up. Memories that last a lifetime and beyond.
I haved thoroughly enjoyed using American Masala, too!
The recipes are well written and easy to follow. The meatloaf recipe alone is worth the purchase price. It's moist and delicious enough for company. And I've never been one to get excited about meatloaf!
Also loved the Shrimp Poha Paella - it's different, easy and absolutely scrumptious. Even the fussy teenagers in my family loved it.
I've been a caterer for 20 years, but this cookbook is teaching me new things about how to enhance the flavor of food with spices. I have tried eight different recipes so far, and loved them all.
You can't go wrong with this book.

Another Winning Book from Suvir Saran

I picked up my copy of "American Masala" last night so this review is a first impressions sort of look at chef Suvir Saran's latest cookbook. First of all, the photography and the graphic elements that make up this book are vividly colorful. As you can see from the cover, the colors are rich and intense - almost a visual foretaste of the equally vivid flavors and unique layering of spices you will experience when you try these recipes. Building on "Indian Home Cooking," this second book provides even more background to the recipes - the stories of people and experiences that have inspired Saran's collection of "125 new classics" are a pure pleasure to read. In fact, when I got home last night, I sat in bed reading Saran's book as I would a novel, getting lost in the textures and rhythms of anecdotes from Delhi, New York and other places around the world.

Today I decided to try Suvir's recipe for vegetarian enchiladas with roasted pepper sauce. As I looked through the recipe to make my shopping list, I discovered that I would be actually making three recipies: the roasted pepper sauce, the stir-fried carrot salad, and the enchiladas themselves. Now enchiladas, like many of the foods you will see in this cookbook, may seem a peculiar offering from one of the leading authorities in this country on Indian cooking. But as the title suggests, this book reflects Saran's own experience in America (where, as he states early on, he has lived almost as long as he had lived in India). Many of these recipes will no doubt seem familiar to you as you thumb through the book, but if you look at the ingredients, you will notice how Suvir subtly recreates them with new flavors and spices.

I have just finished making the roasted pepper sauce (fantastic!), the carrot salad (deeply warm and spicy with a lovely tang of lime) and have assembled the enchiladas. I'll be putting them in the oven in a few minutes and cannot wait to try them.

Get this book, it's a wonderful reflection of a gifted chef.

We have learned that progress in the quantitative description and evaluation of these principles can be obtained with guidance from theory. Modeling - supported by simulation - is a process of transforming abstract theory derived from data into testable structures. Where empirical data are lacking or are difficult to obtain because of structural constraints, the modeler makes assumptions and approximations that, by themselves, are a source of hypotheses. If a neural model is then tied to empirical data, it can be used to predict results and hence again to become subject to experimental tests whose resulting data in tum will lead to further improvements of the model. By means of our present models of visuomotor coordination and its modulation by state-dependent inputs, we are just beginning to simulate and analyze how external information is represented within different brain structures and how these structures use these operations to control adaptive behavior.

Random fractals

From the standpoint of deterministic dynamics and multifractals defined by a generating partition, I do not like this book. However, for affine fractals and methods like R/S analysis it provides a very nice introduction! Like Hull's book on options, stochastic calculus is unfortunately not formulated using Ito calculus. Also nice, the gambler's ruin is presented as an example of affine scaling. What is missing is an introductory discussion of multiaffine scaling, which is of interest for soft turbulence in fluids (an introduction to multiaffine scaling with simple examples can be found in the book on surface fluctuations by Barabasi and Stanley).

Very turgidly written and translated, with much less depth of information than I expected. It's rather like an expanded encyclopedia entry than a real biography (about 100 pages of text, not including the bibliography, which is extensive and useful).

vii Drugs and sex are two topics about which most people have strong opinions and weak understanding. Knowledge of each can be gained in many ways, all with associated rewards and risks. Like all textbooks, this one was written in the belief that reading can foster learning. The book is intended to introduce principles of behavioral pharmacology to readers with little or no knowledge of the discipline but with an interest in how drugs affect human behavior. Gleaning anything of value from the text requires two things from the reader. The first is a willingness to accept an analysis of drug effects that shares little with folklore or common sense no­ tions of drug action. The second is a willingness to accept the fact that the behavioral effects of drugs are complex and depend upon a sizable number of pharmacological and behavioral variables. Unless one is aware of these factors and how they determine a drug's actions, the behavioral effects of drugs can be neither pre­ dicted nor meaningfully explained. If it does nothing else, this volume will make it obvious that the behavioral effects of drugs are lawful and can be predicted and understood on the basis of well-established relations between empirical phenomena. De­ scribing these relations and exploring how they allow behavioral ix x PREFACE pharmacologists to make sense of drug effects that are otherwise incomprehensible was a major goal in preparing the text.
