* Would you flee in terror if confronted with a room full of sweaty people in spandex thongs?* Are you not immune to the occasional Van Halen-style air guitar jump?* Have you been known to push aside your coffee table and dance like crazy in your living room?If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, here at last is your workout book. As simple as throwing on that old Ramones (or even White Stripes) record, punk meets a high- and low-impact workout in an exercise craze that is spreading like wildfire amongst teens and aging rockers alike: Punk Rock Aerobics. Unlikely bedfellows though they seem, punk has always been about image-from Iggy's abs to the Sex Pistols' carefully cultivated outfits. Back in the good old days cigarettes would suffice to keep rockers slim, but to have real punk energy, say these rockers-turned-certified- aerobics-instructors, you need to drop those chips and get off the couch.Chock-full of easy-to-follow moves in an accessible, home-exercise-friendly format, Punk Rock Aerobics contains photos and instructions for DIY, heart-pumping (and thigh-slimming) retro moves like the "Air Guitar," the "Skank," and the "Fire Hydrant," while suggesting songs by the Sex Pistols, Blondie, and the Stooges for a perfect workout soundtrack. With sidebars and Q&A's with rockers like J. Mascis and Evan Dando, this is definitely "not your mom's aerobics class" (Boston Globe).

Probably the coolest fitness book ever written...
By Dee Dee Remote
...and undoubtedly the funniest. I've heard about these chicks for a while and couldn't resist impulse-buying this when I first spotted it. The humor/rock & roll factor caused the initial purchase, but I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be well-written and "unputdownable" until finished. Sound exercise advice, moving personal stories, side-splitting hilarity, super-cool music suggestions, killer layout and photography--it's got just about everything the rock & roll fitness freak could want. I also dig the page of "hate mail" the gals received from clueless punk nazis who just don't get it. I've got only one minor gripe myself...the gals wisely advise against working out in Doc Martens or Chuck Taylors, but then are shown wearing Chucks and Keds skippies in some of the exercise photos. Clearly it was done just for fun--you're not meant to work out in the wacky outfits they're sporting, unless you really want to--but still, this was a contradictory display. Nevertheless, the photos alone are worth the price of the book--the facial expressions and overall unintimidating d.i.y. attitude are totally fun and refreshing. Now, what would really be cool is a companion exercise video! Music licensing fees would probably prohibit this, but a gal can dream.

A bizarre union violating the natural and godly order of things
By Jessica Lux
Punk Rock Aerobics is a "bizarre union violating the natural and godly order of things" by combining the nonconformist underdog with the spandex-clad squeaky clean. The concept is completely DIY--no gym or special equipment required. And of course, the authors have compiled a hundred-plus discography to make your workout rock out. The Boston-based authors obtained their instructor certifications and opened an aerobics studio in 2001, and now their bring attitude and moves to you in paperback format. They make their studio mercifully dark (like a good rock clubs) and welcome guests of all ages and interests.

In addition to all the punk rock posturing, this is a good workout book. The program includes warm-up and cool-down phases. Individual moves have photo illustrations (with punk rock fashion ideas galore), detailed instructions, and tips for optimal performance. Moves are rated by difficulty and include advanced techniques for further exploration.

I love it!
By Lynne C
This is a funny, well written book. The exercise advice is sound. I've been a gym-goer on and off most of my life, and steadily for the past two and a half years. I love the bricks for weightlifting. I'm going to stick with dumbbells, but that's mostly because bricks are too light for me now.
I have to take an mp3 player to the gym so that I can do cardio to Siouxsie & the Banshees and the Replacements. How cool it must be to have a whole class of dancing to the Ramones and Television! I'm dying to start my own class, although I'm not sure the attendance will be very high in the deep south.
And if you buy this book for no other reason, J Mascis demonstrating one of the butt exercises is worth the price. Buy this book.

Clinical Disorders of Membrane Transport ProcessesFrom Springer

Clinical Disorders of Membrane Transport Processes is a softcover book containing a portion of Physiology of Membrane Disorders (Second Edition). The parent volume contains six major sections that deal with general aspects of the physiology of transport processes and specific aspects of transport processes in cells and in organized cellular systems, namely epithelia. This text contains the last section, which deals with the application of the physiology of transport processes to the understanding of clinical disorders. We hope that this smaller volume will be helpful to individuals particularly interested in clinical derangements of membrane transport processes. THOMAS E. ANDREOLI JOSEPH F. HOFFMAN DARRELL D. FANESTIL STANLEY G. SCHULTZ Vll Preface to the Second Edition The second edition of Physiology of Membrane Disorders represents an extensive revision and a considerable expansion of the fIrst edition. Yet the purpose of the second edition is identical to that of its predecessor, namely, to provide a rational analysis of membrane transport processes in individual membranes, cells, tissues, and organs, which in tum serves as a frame of reference for rationalizing disorders in which derangements of membrane transport processes playa cardinal role in the clinical expression of disease. As in the fIrst edition, this book is divided into a number of individual, but closely related, sections. Part V represents a new section where the problem of transport across epithelia is treated in some detail. Finally, Part VI, which analyzes clinical derangements, has been enlarged appreciably.

Disorder and Fracture (NATO Science Series B: Physics)From Springer

Fracture, and particularly brittle fracture, is a good example of an instability. For a homogeneous solid, subjected to a uniform stress field, a crack may appear anywhere in the structure once the threshold stress is reached. However, once a crack has been nucleated in some place, further damage in the solid will in most cases propagate from the initial crack, and not somewhere else in the solid. In this sense fracture is an unstable process. This property makes the process extremely sensitive to any heterogeneity present in the medium, which selects the location of the first crack nucleated. In particular, fracture appears to be very sensitive to disorder, which can favor or impede local cracks. Therefore, in most realistic cases, a good description of fracture mechanics should include the effect of disorder. Recently this need has motivated work in this direction starting from the usual description of fracture mechanics. Parallel with this first trend, statistical physics underwent a very important development in the description of disordered systems. In particular, let us mention the emergence of some "new" concepts (such as fractals, scaling laws, finite size effects, and so on) in this field. However, many models considered were rather simple and well adapted to theoretical or numerical introduction into a complex body of problems. An example of this can be found in percolation theory. This area is now rather well understood and accurately described.

This fascinating life of Gabriele d’Annunzio—the charismatic poet, bon vivant, and virulent nationalist who prefigured Mussolini—traces the early twentieth century’s trajectory from Romantic idealism to Fascist thuggery.

D’Annunzio was Italy’s premier poet at a time when poetry could trigger riots. A brilliant self-publicist, he used his fame to sell his work, seduce women, and promote his extreme nationalism. At once an aesthete and a militarist, he enjoyed risking death no less than making love, and he wrote with equal enthusiasm about Fortuny gowns and torpedoes. In 1915 his incendiary oratory helped drive Italy into the First World War, and in 1919 he led a troop of mutineers into the Croatian port of Fiume, where he established a delinquent utopia. Futurists, anarchists, communists and proto-fascists descended on the place, along with literati and thrill-seekers, drug dealers and prostitutes. Three years later, when the fascists marched on Rome, they belted out anthems they’d learned in Fiume, while Mussolini consciously modeled himself on the great poet. Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s compelling biography is a revelation both of d’Annunzio’s flamboyant life and of the dramatic times he helped to shape.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The subject of this long, busy biography kept notebooks from early on and extraordinarily faithfully. D’Annunzio (1863–1938) also deliberately became one of the first modern celebrities, hard on the heels of Oscar Wilde, and as such he was voluminously documented. Add his many volumes of verse, best-selling novels, and very popular plays, and he offers his chronicler an embarrassment of source material. Hughes-Hallett paints a richly detailed portrait of an eminently civilized sociopath, incapable of restraining his appetites for sex, excitement, and the most exquisite furnishings and utterly insensible to the emotional and financial damage he caused. He went through houses, furnishings, clothes, jewelry, artworks, horses, cars, and airplanes (not boats—he never could conquer seasickness) as if they were water, almost never fully paying for any of them. His mistresses were legion, and among them were some of the era’s most famous performers. And then there were his one-night (or shorter) stands, all recorded, often obscenely, in his notebooks. A national chauvinist who lauded unending warfare and violence, he spearheaded the drive to get Italy into WWI and for 15 months of 1919–20 was the dictator of the Italian-majority Yugoslavian city, Fiume. In the process, he inspired the rising Mussolini, of whom he seldom approved but didn’t criticize because Il Duce paid for every extravagance of his last 15 years. D’Annunzio is appalling but, as Hughes-Hallett presents him, completely enthralling. --Ray Olson

Review

“A stunning portrait of a . . . decadent poet and proto-Fascist firebrand. . . . Reads like a picaresque novel.” —The New Yorker

“A richly detailed portrait of an eminently civilized sociopath. . . . Appalling but, as Hughes-Hallett presents him, completely enthralling.” —Booklist

“Compulsively readable. . . . D’Annunzio was arguably the finest Italian writer of his time, an aesthete who made Oscar Wilde look like a bourgeois, a sexual charmer of Casanovan suavity and appetite . . . a political zealot and spellbinding orator.” –The Washington Post (Best Books of 2013)

"A wonderful biography. . . . Although himself the least empathetic of men, [d'Annunzio] has attracted a biographer of rare sensibility who has set out not to condemn but to understand. The result is a magnificent and beautifully written book that makes readers feel they have really come to know d’Annunzio, his many faults, his fewer virtues, and his enormous talent for life." —New York Review of Books

“Deeply evocative . . . It is not easy to make sense of the life of a man who was a silk-swathed aesthete, prophetic versifier, manic aviator and martial demagogue all in one. . . . Hughes-Hallett is a strong match for her subject. . . . Her style is rich, ironic and pugnacious; she jousts willingly with him and the reader becomes a spectator of this subtle and fascinating contest.” —The Economist

“Dazzling. . . . A shrewd, challenging analysis that links his sadomasochistic psyche to his pitiless ideology. The result is a resonant study of the themes of power, masculinity, violence, and desire that made D’Annunzio such a striking emblem of his age.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Hughes-Hallett crafts an appealing combination of genres, blending elements of biography, fiction, and cultural, social, and military history to create about as complete an image as possible of this most protean personality. . . . Readers will delight in touring the deep, tangled wood of a most astonishing life with a most engaging and learned guide.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“A splendid subject for a biography . . . Hughes-Hallett dances her way through this extraordinary life in a style that is playful, punchy and generally pleasing. . . . In death, as in life, the amazing story of D’Annunzio is painted in primary colours, but with the darkest shadows.” —The Observer (London)

“As gripping a page-turner as the most sensationalist novel—and infinitely more rewarding. . . . It is an amazing story [told] with the vivid narrative thrust of a novel. . . . The book is a revelation, an insight into a murky but significant segment of history.” —The Telegraph (UK)

“Hugely enjoyable. . . .  Hughes-Hallett has a great talent for encapsulating an era or an attitude . . . Pleasurable and readable.” —Sunday Times (London)

“A magnificent portrait of a preposterous character. . . . D’Annunzio was deplorable, brilliant, ludicrous, tragic, but above all irresistible. . . . His biographer has done him full justice.” —The Mail on Sunday (London)

“Beautiful, strange, and original. . . . An extraordinarily intimate portrait. . . . If you want to understand fascism, you must start with d’Annunzio; and if you wish to understand him, then here is your book.” —New Statesman (UK)

“How a rather diminutive poet, novelist and dramatist, with a compulsive urge to transgress, priapic sexual instincts, and a fascination with cruelty, blood and death came to be Italy’s most celebrated man of action and a precursor of Fascism is the subject of Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s engrossing and superbly written biography.” —Times Literary Supplement (London)

“Remarkable . . . a terrific piece of work—as audacious as it is gripping, as thorough as it is insightful and as stirring as it is shocking.” —The Daily Mail (UK)

... of a true rotter who happened to be a great poet and brilliant intellectual
By Scott in Vermont
Very well-written biography of a true rotter who happened to be a great poet and brilliant intellectual. Sex, drugs, spending other people's money lavishly, more sex, more drugs, a classical music lover, and last but not least, a fascist dictator who beat Mussolini to the punch, and by all accounts, an orator to rival Hitler. What more could you want? A thoroughly entertaining read!

A good read
By M DiFalco
Knowing very little about Gabriele D'Annunzio, I found the book very interesting. It is also a history of the Italy of D'Annunzio times as well as the rise of fascism. Also enjoyed reading of all the artists, writers, lovers who weaved in and out of D'Annunzio's life.

The many sides of a rebel poet
By Paul Gelman
It's September 21, 1927. He is in his bedroom. A woman has just left. A disordered bed. An overturned scent bottle. A little gold box in which few traces of cocaine remain. A cold supper laid out on the table. D'Annunzio hasn't yet touched the food, but the woman ate some of it during the night. Now, alone, he eats ravenously. The fig and the prosciuto each remind him of the intimate parts of the woman he shared last night.
This is just one almost complete entry which appears in this fascinating new book on one of the most colourful characters in modern history.
Who was D'Annunzio? He was a poet, a seducer, a womanizer, a pilot, a writer, a playwright, a rebel, a leader of proto-fascists and of mutineers. He worshipped Napoleon. He admired Carlyle who would confirm the poet's veneration for great men and reinforce his conviction that it was not economic forces, as the socialists maintained, but the action of superb individuals that shaped history. Born in 1863, he wrote many novels and poems amd spent some time in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century. These were the times when poets still had a say and were admired. James Joyce called him "the only European writer after Flaubert to carry the novel into new territory". He was also a journalist and yearned for public adoration. He was a notoriours womanizer who took care to document even the tiniest intimate moments of his sexual acts. His sexual appetite was insatiable. He enjoyed drugs and mysticism. And airplanes. And fast cars, courtesy of Fiat. The masses loved him. He was a demagogue and a kind of a Duce; at least this is how he referred to himself many years before the people and history made the acquaintance with the name of Mussolini.
Then, in September 1919, he marched into what he called "The city of Holocaust, Fiume. This episode forms the second part of the book. A city "with a staccato history and mongrel population" sited at the northern part of the Adriatic, which has been one of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's two great Adriatic ports. At the end of WW1 it was occupied by Allied forces, but D'Annunzio thought it should belong to the Italians. He commanded over 200 ex-soldiers in the city until the Italian navy bombed him out. Afetr he left in 1921, over 200 people were killed and about one thousand were wounded in clashes between fascists and socialists. After this episode he would lead a lonely life, still enjoying sex with an endless number of women. This was the man who considered death of the so many young soldiers not only dulce and decorum but also sublime.
The many notebooks he left, his huge correspondence and literary output make it easy on his biographer, since he, and in this case Ms. Hughes, can render D'Annunzio's thoughts, tastes, emotions and physical sensations. As for the style of writing this book, let me quote the author's words verbatim:" I have made nothing up, but I have freely made use of techniques commoner in fiction writing than in biography. I have not always observed chronological order; the beginning is seldom the best place to start. I have alternated legato narrative with staccato glimpses of the man and fragments of his thoughts".
Because he was a public figure for over half a century, the author has been able to draw on dozens of others' records to show the of him outside as well. In short, the book has many viewpoints about D'Annunzio.
This is a splendid biography; in addition, is is also an excellent cultural histoy of Europe between 1880-1930. It shows to what extent other writers and philosophers have influenced D'Annunzio. Among those there were Nietzsche, Rolland, Dostoyevsky, Flaubert and Proust. Written in a very unique and special style, in-depth and superbly researched, this very long biography containing over 700 pages of written text, will be unsurpassed for many years to come.

Initially, this work was designed to document and study the diversification of modern mammalian groups and was quite successful and satisfying. However, as field and laboratory work continued, there began to develop a suspicion that not all of the Eocene story was being told. It became apparent that most fossil samples, especially those from the American West, were derived from similar preservational circumstances and similar depositional settings. A program was initiated to look for other potential sources of fossil samples, either from non-traditional lithologies or from geographic areas that were not typically sampled. As this program of research grew it began to demonstrate that different lithologies and different geographic areas told different stories from those that had been developed based on more typical faunal assemblages.
This book is conceived as an introduction to non-traditional Eocene fossils samples, and as a place to document and discuss features of these fossil assemblages that are rare or that come from rarely represented habitats.

I Really LIke This This Book
By RdgJr near NYC
I had a wonderful time reading this book. It's more of a *long* essay than it is a book. The writing is excellent, and there are lots of wonderful photographs interspersed within. I don't know if it really matters, but for what it's worth I read part of this book while sitting at a table at Birdland on 46th Street in NYC waiting for my favorite up and coming piano player, David Epstein, to return from break to play another set. I have three books by Gary Giddins and like him so much I'm going to buy more of his books. By coinicidence I saw a video recently on the life of Charlie Parker, and it used many of the same photographs that were used in this book. I am not aware of a tie in between the two products however. In conclusion, this book was enjoyable and I learned a great deal about Charlie Parker from the point of view of his personality and his character and what his life was like.

Praying for Sheetrock: A Work of Nonfiction, by Melissa Fay Greene

Finalist for the 1991 National Book Award and a New York Times Notable book, Praying for Sheetrock is the story of McIntosh County, a small, isolated, and lovely place on the flowery coast of Georgia--and a county where, in the 1970s, the white sheriff still wielded all the power, controlling everything and everybody. Somehow the sweeping changes of the civil rights movement managed to bypass McIntosh entirely. It took one uneducated, unemployed black man, Thurnell Alston, to challenge the sheriff and his courthouse gang--and to change the way of life in this community forever. "An inspiring and absorbing account of the struggle for human dignity and racial equality" (Coretta Scott King)

Amazon.com Review
Despite what it said in the New York Times or the Congressional Record, not everybody in America got the word right away about the civil rights movement. Thus it was that well into the 1970s, McIntosh County in backwoods Georgia remained a place where the black majority still had never elected one of their own to any county office, where black kids were bused away from the white school, and where the white county sheriff had his hand in every racket there was. Praying for Sheetrock is the saga of how, thanks to the leadership of a black shop-steward-turned-county-commissioner named Thurnell Alston, together with the aid of a cadre of idealistic Legal Services lawyers (Melissa Greene was one of their paralegals) this situation began to change. The story, written as grippingly as a novel, is charged with twists that only nonfiction can deliver; for example, Alston, for all the brave good he did, ultimately got caught in a federal sting and went to jail while the corrupt sheriff walked. This is, writes Greene, a story of "large and important things happening in a very little place."

From Publishers Weekly
As the first black commissioner of McIntosh County, Ga., retired boilermaker Thurnell Alston brought the civil rights struggle to a coastal backwater in the 1970s. He initiated voting rights lawsuits, fought drugs and introduced medical clinics, plumbing and running water to "a forgotten county needy in every way." A threat to corrupt Sheriff Tom Popell, who ruled the county as his fiefdom, Alston challeged the "good old boy" patronage system. But the irascible commissioner became increasingly distanced from his constituency and, after his youngest son's tragic death in 1983, he neglected his wife and children in escapist pursuits. The target of a government sting operation, he was convicted of drug conspiracy charges in 1988 and sentenced to six and a half years in federal prison camp, where he remains. By turns inspiring and sad, his story is told with dramatic skill by Atlanta journalist Greene. 75,000 first printing; $75,000 ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
It's hard to believe that this powerful story of the political awakening of the black community in McIntosh County, Georgia took place in the 1970s. Untouched by the civil rights movement, this isolated rural county was long dominated by a renegade sheriff until a series of events resulted in the election of Thurnell Alston as the first black county commissioner since Reconstruction. Greene's use of the actual words of county residents adds an air of truth that cannot be denied. This book needs to be read by everyone who does not know the deep South and by those who think all of our racial problems were corrected in the 1960s. Young adults of all races would find this more enlightening than many history books. For most collections. --John W. King, Univ. of Mary land Libs. , College Park

Things I never knew and I lived there!
By K. T. Williams
This book was so informative. I was young when a lot of the events took place but I remember being very confused about them. I thought this was a great book and everyone from McIntosh County should read it. It was cool to read about people I know. Wow!

Controversy Catastrophism and Evolution: The Ongoing Debate, by Trevor Palmer

In Controversy, Trevor Palmer fully documents how traditional gradualistic views of biological and geographic evolution are giving way to a catastrophism that credits cataclysmic events, such as meteorite impacts, for the rapid bursts and abrupt transitions observed in the fossil record.
According to the catastrophists, new species do not evolve gradually; they proliferate following sudden mass extinctions. Placing this major change of perspective within the context of a range of ancient debates, Palmer discusses such topics as the history of the solar system, present-day extraterrestrial threats to earth, hominid evolution, and the fossil record.

Review

From the reviews:

"Trevor Palmer … provides in this volume a chronicle of the emergence of catastrophe evidence and thought. He explores planetary science, paleontology, geology, and evolution, with emphasis on human evolution from about 1970 to 1999, but with substantial expeditions into the history of astronomy and evolutionary theory … . it is … a major contribution to understanding the growth of the present position. … Palmer thoroughly documents the K-T extinction dispute." (Hiram Caton, Reports of the National Center for Science Education, Vol. 25 (3-4), 2005)

Steps toward a new theory of evolution
By Hiram Caton
As I prepared a review of this book for a science journal, I checked amazon to sample what others readers say. To my surprise, no readers have recorded their views. So I shall scribble a few words in the hope of drawing attention to this worthy study.

Palmer's controlling idea is that discoveries and conceptual innovation in the four fields covered point to a new theory of evolution in which natural selection will be reinterpreted or replaced by self-organization theory. The vacant space that the new theory will occupy is the gaping hole currently separating population genetics and molecular biology. He suggests that self-organization theory, a.k.a. non-linear dynamics, a.k.a. chaos theory, is the candidate for linking physico-chemical processes with molecular biology and organism behaviour. (The author, an enzyme biologist, is well positioned to sense this vacant space). The four fields covered are planetary science, geology, paleontology, and evolution theory. The uniting empirical theme is catastrophes of climatic and extra-terrestrial origin. The unifying conceptual theme is provided by the capacity of non-linear dynamics to combine equilibrium behaviour with many kinds of sudden shifts in system dynamics. These shifts are `catastrophes', be they microscopic or galactic.

When evolutionary theory took shape, its advocates had no inking of the mathematics of chaos theory. But they were aware of evidence for geophysical and biotic catastrophes, viz, apparent mass extinctions revealed by drastic discontinuities in biota between contiguous geological strata. The evidence was explained away as mere appearance and was replaced by the twin doctrines of Uniformitarianism and Gradualism. Uniformitarianism interpreted the vast changes in the elevation and subsidence as due to very slow processes, like erosion, acting over very long periods. Admittedly catastrophic events (volcanoes and earthquakes) were trivialized as local events with no geophysical implications. Similarly, the hundreds of meteors that illuminate the skies annually were dismissed as inconsequential (when they were acknowledged at all). The planetary system was taken to be the paradigm of orderly uniform process governed by natural laws. This was an erroneous interpretation of Newton's theory. Kepler's discovery of the elliptical orbit of the planets, and the gravitational explanation of their position and orbits implied the possibility of cometary impacts on Earth and other planets. Indeed Newton believed that such impacts had occurred. The first asteroid was discovered in 1801; a century later, about 500 had been discovered and it was known that tons of cosmic dust settle on Earth each year. In 1908 an asteroid explosion over Siberia visited ruin on an area the size of Belgium. This wake-up call was ignored. The Uniformitarian creed began to unravel only in 1980 when Nobel physicist Luis Alvarez proposed that 65 million years ago a ten kilometre diameter asteroid impact caused the K-T boundary mass extinction. Today, many heated words later, we know that there are billions, perhaps trillions, of asteroids and comets in the asteroid belt, the Kuiper Belt, and the Oort Cloud. They constitute the solar system as a cosmic shooting gallery. Not only have they bombarded all the planets and their satellites, but they also bombard one another. Hundreds of meteorites reach the Earth annually. Strikes large enough to produce effects on a global scale occur about every million years. The lunar surface is exemplary of the density of impacts that the Earth has received. They number in the thousands; some craters are 3200 kilometers diameter. So much for the irenic Newtonian universe. But there is more. Life on Earth is also subject to the effects of coroneal mass ejections, solar flares, tectonic movements, flood basalt volcanoes, super nova explosions, polar reversals, and the Earth's variable declination on its rotational axis, any of which may have catastrophic effects, and some of which have very likely had such effects.

The planetary science here adumbrated is largely the product of new data gathering technologies associated with satellite probes and telescopes. It's a whole new world, significantly discontinuous with pre-1970 astronomy. The Uniformitarian conception assumed by Nineteenth Century evolution theory wasn't consistent even with the astronomy of that time, as I have mentioned. Today it is merely quaint, except that it is also a monument to the power and persistence of well-intentioned scientific error. The error meant is not, of course, the failure of earlier generations to know only what posterity would discover, but the claim of dogmatic certainty for theory that was heavily compromised by discordant facts and inconsistency.

The locus of this controversy is the `Darwin wars' that erupted when some paleontologists (S.J. Gould, Niles Eldredge, Steven Stanley, David Raup, David Jablonki) blew the whistle on Gradualism, substituting a Punctuated Equilibrium pattern instead. The neo-Darwinian orthodoxy initially opposed the alternative hypothesis as gross error. But then, when mass extinctions were accepted (repugnant to orthodoxy because they imply catastrophic causation), and the sudden origin of many new phyla in short times was confirmed, neo-Darwinians changed their tune: the heretics are now denounced for perpetrating the calumny that Gradualist theory ever denied the punctuation pattern! Protest as they might, nothing in standard theory explains highly variable evolutionary rates, the variation being, at one end, stasis over hundreds of millions of years, and at the other, a profusion of new phyla in short bursts (the Cambrian `big bang' is the classic example). Gradualist theory was formulated in the absence of knowledge of variation and only some glimmerings about what made orthogenesis work. It would thus be a stroke of extraordinary good luck if the proposed mechanism of change, natural selection, turned out to be right. When the Nineteen Century closed, Darwinians were in a frantic chase-fruitless as it turned out-for a slam dunk proof of the evolution of a single species. When the Twentieth Century closed, neo-Darwinians were in damage control to salvage the one and only slam dunk proof of evolution, industrial melanism, from dismissal on the grounds of tampered evidence. The use-by date of natural selection is long over due. Palmer's study assists recognizing that fact, and points the way to new theory.

. . . and he's NOT a creationist!
By Frank Sherwin
It's hard to know where to begin when confronted with this outstanding tome. Trevor Palmer has no theological axe to grind ("Then, as now, there were religious fundamentalists whose minds were closed to scientific argument . . . " p. 82), but I find he's saying exactly what creation scientists are saying - albeit indirectly. Indeed, he states on p. xi, ". . . the Modern Synthesis, if not actually wrong, is far from complete" and a few lines later admits that natural selection is mainly a stabilizing factor, not involved in "driving evolution forward" - this from a man who was an undergrad at the same Cambridge College (Christ's) as Charles Darwin! Palmer realizes he may be giving us non-Darwinists too much ammo, so he places his faith in 'self-organization' - although he admits it's "still lacking an experimental basis" p. 283.
The crux of Palmer's book is that Earth's history is indeed a record of massive catastrophic events (e.g. Table 4.1). He takes the reader through the history of scientific thought prior to Darwin where most naturalists believed in the Flood - on through the Dark Ages of uniformitarianism (and all its hybrids), to the present age of neo-catastrophism, being careful to distance this movement from Bible-believing scientists, ". . . 20th century catastrophism is no longer handicapped (or at least, not to anything like the same extent as once was the case) by supposed associations with unscientific [sic] dogmatism" p. 342.
Palmer bashes other critics of macroevolution, fellow Britishers Francis Hitching and Richard Milton, and then pretty much goes on to say what they have been saying in their books.
His section on "human evolution" (The Erratic Descent of Man) and origin of life review are themselves worth the price of the book, and his reference section is incredible.
Here's what I find so refreshing with what atheist Palmer is saying- he has reviewed neo-Darwinism (gradualism) and uniformitarianism and found them lacking. The reasons and scientific evidences he gives are exactly what creation scientists have been saying for many decades. Palmer and others state there was a series of mass extinctions (section 4.5). This was secular heresy 3 decades ago - you didn't dare tell a geologist this! Meanwhile creationists have been saying there was one massive Extinction Event (Genesis 6 - 9). Slowly but surely geologists are coming - screaming and kicking - to a biblical view of earth history, and they are doing so because of the scientific evidence, not in spite of it. Palmer's book is an expensive must for the creation activist.
