Top of the Order: 25 Writers Pick Their Favorite Baseball Player of All TimeFrom Da Capo Press

There have been many anthologies devoted to our national pastime’s greatest players, but here, at last, is one dedicated to those, for reasons far more personal than stats-based, we call our favorites. In Top of the Order twenty-five of today’s premier sports journalists, cultural critics, novelists, and humorists (as well as a couple of former major leaguers) deliver memorable, never-before-published odes to their favorite players, past or present. By turns uplifting, woeful, and hilarious, these essays define what it means to be beset by that strange, incurable condition known as baseball fandom.

Featuring original essays by:
Roger Kahn on Jackie Robinson, Buzz Bissinger on Albert Pujols, Jonathan Eig on Lou Gehrig, Neal Pollack on Greg Maddux, Laura Lippman on Brooks Robinson, Jeff Pearlman on Garry Templeton, Jim Bouton on Steve Dembowski, Pat Jordan on Tom Seaver, Michael Ian Black on Mookie Wilson, Matt Taibbi on Jim Rice, Steve Almond on Rickey Henderson, and many more.

Review
Library Journal, 2/1/10
“Leading off this impressive lineup of fiction and nonfiction writers, journalists, musicians, etc., is W.P. Kinsella with a vivid foreword reminding baseball fans why they love the sport. Then the all-star contributors present their favorite ball player…On many occasions, the writer’s explanation for his or her choice tells us much about the writer’s own youth and subsequent career choices—thus the ultimate charm of this collection is how it tells us something about ourselves as well as our heroes.”

Booklist, 4/1/10
“The profiles run the gamut from serious to whimsical; virtually all expose an element of baseball’s quirky, often irrational fandom. Great fun for fans, who will be inspired to examine their own fond feelings for that over-the-hill middle reliever on the downside of a mediocre career.”

BiblioBuffet.com, 3/21/10
“A wonderful addition to the baseball library…Twenty-five beautifully written, memory-evoking and all around gripping reminiscences of the players that have touched our lives…Features a diverse array of contributors…The selections of the writers is at times obvious and at other times idiosyncratic but that is one of the reasons Top of the Order is so special…The contributors to Top of the Order have been inspired to deliver some of the finest sports writing that I have read in recent years—and often from contributors who would not be considered ‘sports writers.’ Not just because the writing is beautiful, but because it resonates powerfully with the reader; it is as if the writers and the reader share a common past and common memories—the common ground of being fans of the sport…Each of the selections will evoke memories in the true baseball fan.”

Boston Globe “A Reading Life” column, 4/4/10
“’Favorite,’ unlike ‘greatest,’ covers a multitude of sins and allows for personal reflection which is what this book…is all about.”
New York Post “Required Reading” column, 4/4/10
“A delightful reminder of why we love baseball. Top of the Order gets to players’ quirks—what makes them individuals in a team game.”

Louisville Courier-Journal, 4/3/10 and Newark Star-Ledger, 4/4/10
“Some writers chose the greats: Roger Kahn, a great himself, actually manages to find something new to say about Jackie Robinson. Some selections are quirky: actor and screenwriter Michael Ian Black chooses former Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson, inspired by a visit Mookie made to Black's hometown of Hillsboro, N.J., when Black was 11…Others, like editor Sean Manning's own choice, Michael Jordan—yes, that Michael Jordan, the great basketball player and mediocre minor leaguer—are so out of left field as to inspire awe.”

Deseret News, 4/3/10
“An entertaining collection of writings that baseball fans will thoroughly enjoy.”

Bookviews.com, April 2010
“Fun reading…Between its covers you will find some unusual choices among the writers who include singers, comedians and film critics. Their enthusiasm for those whom they think are the best players of a game is contagious and reveals why baseball continues to hold a place in the heart for many Americans.”

Ron Kaplan’s Baseball Bookshelf blog, 4/1/10
“There’s an eclectic group of contributors here…Some essays cover foreign players and some aren’t even real. Some are Hall of Famers, while others aren’t exactly household names and one didn’t even make it as a pro. But these players have one thing in common: for whatever reason, they were someone’s favorite. The heart wants what the heart wants; there’s not always a logical explanation.”

Corduroy Books website, 4/6/10
“It’s a hell of a book, funny and fast…Are there misses? Reader, please: I’m not gonna subject you to a baseball metaphor or anything (not every hit can be a homer; not every game can be a winner, etc. until blech), but yes, there are misses. More often, however, there’s that great, great moment, that best term from both baseball and books: connect. There’s contact made.”

Sacramento/San Francisco Book Review, April 2010
“Top of the Order differentiates itself from the standard yearly crop of baseball biographies and statistical treatises by being a collection of essays…[A] wide range of contributing authors.”

Heeb magazine
“Top of the Order is the early favorite for our Best Book of 5770.”

CurledUp.com, 4/21/10
“Some of the players chosen are surprising, some not, but the real fun of Top of the Order comes from reading how and why these particular players were chosen…There is something in Top of the Order for everyone, even non-fans of the game.”

InternetReviewofBooks.com, April 2010
“If you’re looking to gear up for the season, try Top of the Order, a nice collection of essays on favorite players…It’s a lot of fun to learn a little about each of the favorites and why that particular player strikes a chord with the writer. Each essay is a nice bite-size piece of history in a sport that is nothing if not rich in history…The Top of the Order writers deliver the goods…Overall, Top of the Order is a good book for any baseball fan, casual or die-hard. There’s a little something in it for everybody.”

Tucson Citizen, 4/14/10
“The essays chosen for this collection help define what it means to be beset by that strange, incurable condition known as baseball fandom. This isn’t just a book about RBIs or out-of-the-park homeruns but rather a tribute to the pitchers, catchers, and sluggers who connected with the hearts of their fans.”

Asbury Park Press, 5/2/10
“You may—or you may not—know all of the 25 writers here, but if you're a fan of America's pastime, you're undoubtedly familiar with the names of the famed players.”

Largehearted Boy, 4/29/10
“Baseball fans build their own personal relationship with the game and its players, and these relationships are portrayed exceptionally well in Top of the Order…Sean Manning has brought together a stellar group of writers, journalists, musicians, and entertainers, and each shares a story of a ballplayer who has touched their life.”

Farther off the Wall, 4/14/10
“There's only 25 who made this first one. We'd love to see another 25 write their essays next year, and 25 more the year after.”

InfoDad.com, 5/6/10
“Devoted baseball fans will surely have their favorite players—and Top of the Order gives readers a chance to compare their picks with those of 25 writers...These 25 writers, making 25 choices, offer readers far more than 25 chances to argue, debate, agree, complain and then, hopefully, return to real-life pursuits.”

BaseballAmerica.com, 5/12/10
“The concept of Top of the Order is a good one…[An] eclectic roster of writers.”

ForeWord, 5/20/10
“Manning has assembled an eclectic group…All these different ‘flavors’ merely add to the enjoyment and will no doubt make the reader reflect on his or her own off-beat favorite.”

AmericanProfile, 6/6/10
“Essays ranging from whimsical to weighty. The delicious diversity of the voices and the choices makes this a home run for baseball fans of all ages and affiliations, pop-culture junkies and anyone else who has ever fallen under the spell of America’s favorite summertime sport.”

Roanoke Times, 6/6/10
“The choices are surprising, and the essayists’ reasons for loving them are delightful…You won’t read about Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams or Joe DiMaggio in this book. But you’ll discover that even players who never won a World Series ring somehow managed to win a place in some fan’s heart.”

TheMorningNews.org, 6/9/10
“Some surprising inclusions.”

Asbury Park Press, 6/13/10
“The contributors—not all sports writers—and the players they have chosen constitute an eclectic gathering…The well-told stories—fun in some cases and moving in others—illustrate once again the literary potential of the team sport that is most absorbed in the triumphs and failures of the individual player.” Oxford American, 8/3/10“The majority of entries…are illuminating…A bonus in a collection of this sort is the unplanned way in which the views of authors converse or even debate one another…Stellar writers…What I got from this book was how unfair our feelings of both love and hate can be—there can be poor reasoning behind both. I also got from this book the quiet and self-reflection that wise writing can lead to.” Acadiana LifeStyle, November 2010“Baseball fans will…find a lot to enjoy.”
Bookgasm.com, 11/11/10“Sean Manning does a great job as editor pulling together some very fine writers to contribute some really excellent short essays on baseball players and what it all means to the writers as fans…This book [is] in the upper tier of sportswriting ant...

He stood over the corpse and sneered.
By Sam Sattler
Maybe it is because the season is so long, some 162 games stretching over a full six months during which a baseball fan can live and die with his team for three or four hours at least five days a week. Maybe it is because the game attracts the kind of sports fan who loves nothing better than immersing himself in the detailed statistics and history of the game. Whatever the cause, there is just something special about the long-term bond between a baseball fan and his favorite players and team that other sports do not quite seem able to match.

Even though most baseball fans have a favorite all time player, they might find it difficult to explain their choices to other fans because not everyone makes the obvious choice. It would be too easy if everyone chose Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, Albert Pujols, Barry Bonds (unlikely, these days) or one of the game's great pitchers. Choosing a favorite player is a personal thing and many fans choose their favorites as much for what they do off the field as for how those players have affected the record books.

In "Top of the Order," published just in time for the 2010 baseball season, twenty-five journalists, novelists, former players, and entertainers offer short pieces about their own favorite players and how they made those choices. Some of the players chosen are surprising, some not, but the real fun of "Top of the Order "comes from reading how and why these particular players were chosen. Among the more expected choices are players like Tom Seaver, Lou Gehrig, Albert Pujols, Jackie Robinson and Mariano Rivera. But among the twenty-five favorites are also players like Steve Dembowski, Michael Jordan, Mookie Wilson, Neifi Perez and fictional catcher Crash Davis. Many readers, I suspect, will be drawn first to the essays on the second group of players out sheer curiosity to find out why a fan holds them in such high regard. As author W.P. Kinsella says in the book's foreword, "Favorites, it seems, come in all shapes, sizes, and degrees of talent."

Readers/baseball fans will delight in the relationship between writer (and minor league pitcher) Pat Jordan and his all time favorite player, Tom Seaver. They will be astounded by the unique talent that Steve Dembowski, Jim Bouton's choice, had for getting hit by a pitch almost at will and how he was never given a look by a major league team despite his incredible college career .729 on base percentage. They will perhaps wonder at how Whitney Pastorek could still choose Roger Clemens as his favorite all time player knowing what we know about the man today. And they will enjoy revisiting the careers and personalities of some of the greatest players who have ever played the game.

A portion of one paragraph from Jonathan Eig's remarks on Lou Gehrig, though, says it all for the baseball purists out there who so strongly detest how the steroid-generation of players has corrupted the game and its history: "As a boy, I hadn't cared a bit if my heroes were decent or dreadful people. They were ballplayers, and that was all. Now, with Bonds, one of the greatest ballplayers of all time struck me as one of the lowest pieces of dung ever scraped from the bottom of a shoe. He didn't just kill the notion of ballplayer as hero. He beat it to a bloody, lifeless pulp, and stood over the corpse and sneered."

There is something in "Top of the Order" for everyone, even non-fans of the game, but Eig's words are sure to touch the hearts of those who feel betrayed by what was allowed to happen to the sport for so many years, depriving the true greats of their records and cheapening those very records forever.

Well written, very entertaining
By Chip Kruthoffer
Well worth the $10 for the Kindle edition. Well-written and often humorous profiles of a variety of ballplayers, many of whom are favorites of mine, too. The couple I did not know well were among the best-written pieces that had me doing more research the player. A must for baseball lovers who enjoy good writing.

Interesting Perspectives
By Larry Underwood
Choosing your favorite baseball player of all-time is an interesting assignment. The choice often boils down to some subjective criterion which may or may not correlate to the player's skill levels on the field. Maybe he went out of his way to give you his autograph when he easily could've ignored you among the rest of the gaggle of kids clamoring for that priceless souvenir; or maybe he delivered some big hit in the clutch when you were rooting extra hard for him to come through.

Maybe you liked the way he hustled, or maybe you liked the way he kicked the water cooler in defeat. Whatever the reasons, we all have them for deciding our own "personal number one", and nobody can convince us that our choice is a lame one. Such is the case with an assortment of sports writers and miscellaneous characters from the game of baseball - twenty-five to be exact - and they wrote a series of essays (edited by Sean Manning) explaining why they like a certain player - past, present, or even fictitious. There are no rules here; just an interesting array of thoughts on some of the players who have toiled in big league uniforms, and stand alone as that person's all-time favorite.

Some of the choices seem logical - from Lou Gehrig to Albert Pujols; and from Jackie Robinson to Brooks Robinson - while others seem nearly bizarre - from Steve Dembowski to Michael Jordan (as a baseball player?); and from Garry Templeton to Crash Davis (Kevin Costner's quirky character in "Bull Durham").

Each essay which tries to explain that particular person's selection is at times humorous; at times poignant; at times illogical; at times perfectly rational. Without a doubt, the reader will come away knowing that there are as many reasons as there are seasons; and the reasons make for an interesting perspective for any fan of the game to enjoy.

12 Months of Beauty!
By Doyle Grant
Many years ago, I made the 'mistake' of giving my sisters each a copy of the Sierra Club Wilderness Calendar for Christmas. I did the same thing the following year. The year after that, thinking they had to be getting bored with the calendars, I gave them something different. But they did not want anything different... they wanted the calendars!

So here I am, quite a few years later, still giving each of my three sisters a Wilderness calendar every Christmas.

Having said that, the calendars are always spectacular. The views are exceptional, and photographed well with top-quality cameras. The pictures are printed large and beautiful on very good quality paper.

You won't go wrong with one of these calendars.

Oh, yes - the calendars come packaged in a nice mailer. Just add postage and a couple of addresses and it's ready to mail to your sister in Florida - or anywhere else for that matter.

Terrific photo calendar for nature lovers
By P. C. Brock
Although I usually receive several calendars as gifts or freebies every year, I have faithfully put down cash for one- and only one- for the past 32 years. That's the Sierra Club Wilderness calendar. The photography is always breathtaking, and the calendar acts as an reminder (and invitation to) the stunning landscapes of this earth throughout the year.

Always a Great Calendar
By Bill
I've been getting this calendar annually for many years. The pictures are always fantastic, and I like the generous amount of space provided for writing in daily activities. All kinds of pens and pencils can be used for marking activities because the paper is not too glossy. Having one of these calendars in our home has become such a habit that there would be noticeable void on the wall if we didn't get one every year.

Serious Business: The Art And Commerce Of Animation In America From Betty Boop To Toy Story, by Stefan Kanfer

As Roger Rosenblatt put it, ”What makes Serious Business a special treat is that it is like the best of the cartoons itself—funny, touching, and infused with thoughtful joy.” This generously illustrated history of animation looks at the creation and celluloid careers of such American icons as Felix the Cat, Jiminy Cricket, Mickey and Minnie, Popeye and Olive Oyl, Goofy, Yogi Bear, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Daffy Duck, Tom and Jerry, and the Pink Panther. Art and commerce collide again and again as Stefan Kanfer wittily probes the origins of such diverse cartoon families as the Flintstones, the Jetsons, and the Simpsons and looks at the phenomenal success of feature-length animated films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Lion King. Serious Business is itself a classic of animation, bringing to life an art and an industry whose creations have now worked their way into every corner of American life.

Amazon.com Review
The business behind creating and producing comics, cartoons, or, specifically, animation is nothing short of fascinating. More than a "behind the scenes" book or a "tell all" expose, Serious Business is a great find for this reason: it places an emphasis on the creative people in the industry. To quote the dust cover: "The history of animation is the story of its geniuses. Serious Business disperses the clouds created by decades of received wisdom, bogus myth-making, and corporate propaganda to reveal a cast of characters whose entertainment value exceeds that of their creations."

From Publishers Weekly
How American cartoons reflect American culture and vice versa is the subject of an entertaining and informative study by former Time staffer Kanfer. Although the sections on recent cartoon history (covering slick studio fare like Toy Story as well as MTV stars Beavis and Butt-head) are less colorful than the history of the early years, Kanfer's tone is steady throughout. From the beginning, animated shorts utilized painful stereotypes: the first real animated motion picture, Humorous Phases of a Funny Face, ends as "[t]he words Coon and Cohen become caricatures of an African American and a Jew." This tradition continued as animators struggled to find a more appropriate application for their art, with many of them switching from human subjects to animals or objects in order to spotlight special effects. Kanfer gives brief, helpful background on Walt Disney and weighs how the early efforts of Mickey Mouse's creator differed from the popular cartoons of the day, including Disney's predilection for rural farm settings while most others set their work in cities. Disney was no stranger to the use of damaging racial and ethnic caricatures, however. In "The Three Little Pigs" the wolf wore rabbinical dress and spoke with a heavy Yiddish accent. The births of many popular characters provide amusing anecdotes: Daffy Duck, for example, was given his characteristic sputtering voice as a dig at a Warner Brothers executive who conducted impromptu inspections of the animators' workplace and suffered from a terrible speech impediment, and Chuck Jones credited some of Mark Twain's writing with providing the inspiration for Wile E. Coyote. Even though Kanfer's story slows a little at the end, it is thoroughly engaging throughout.

From Library Journal
As an art form, animation is magically irresistible; as a reflection of broader American popular culture, it is amazingly on target. A former Time magazine editor, Kanfer here shows how the people, politics, prejudices, trends, and technologies of various eras have been so aptly reflected in each set of frames. From its tedious hand-drawn beginnings, to the advent of Disney, to such modern features as Watership Down and Toy Story, the reader is treated to solid history. But Kanfer also provides savvy commentary on a variety of factors that influenced the final product and elicited the public's eternal fascination. As a result, the antics of old and new characters alike?from Bugs Bunny to Beavis and Butthead?take on a whole new meaning. The author knows his subject and revels in it, thereby rewarding the reader with many fresh discoveries. While Kanfer's humbly stated intention is to augment previous writings on the subject, his work should certainly join the ranks of important literature in the field. Highly recommended for both students of this art form and cartoon enthusiasts.?Carol J. Binkowski, Bloomfield, N.J.

No Betty-Boop
By Fred Conwell
Amazon search indicated this was all Betty Boop so I bought this especially for a Betty Boop nut. Betty Boop was on the cover but nowhere in the index! So now I am reading it to see if I wasted my money.

A mixed bag...
By A Customer
"Serious Business" is generally a good book, though with a few major flaws. It distinguishes itself by providing not only an overview of the history of cinematic animation in the US, but also places the rise and fall of animation in a historical and cultural context. It gives a clearer picture of how the politics and economics of the times influenced and steered not only the creation and content of animated pictures, but also the business aspects as well.
On the plus side, Kanfer does indeed delve beyond the standard name-and-dates syndrome of other animation histories. He attempts to provide a broad overview of the early years of animation and how non-Disney studios were to eventually fall to the Mouse. When focused, Kanfer's writing is extremely engaging and his accounts of the various political maneuverings are facsinating.
Unfortunately, Kanfer attempts to squeeze too much into to little space. One could easily see this book being twice the size it is now. As such, the very aspects one wants to explore most - how such things as economics, war, race and politics in America effected animation - are never really fleshed out for any given studio/cartoon beyond a few pages, or paragraphs. Significant space is given to Disney's story (perhaps deservedly so), but I would've liked to learn more about 'outsider' studios as well.
Kanfer also has a habit of not staying focused in his chapters and bouncing suddenly from place to place. It doesn't make the book unreadable by any means, but it does distract from the over-all flow of the narritave.
All in all though, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a general historical overview of animation.

Great intro to American animation history!
By A Customer
Well written, concise survey of American animation history. The only slights are that he doesn't have much to say on non-Disney animated efforts of the past decade, especially television animation, and that too many pages praise the horrendous UPA 'toons. Otherwise, this is a great intro to a neglected sector of American culture. If you want to learn about cartoons without buying a separate book on each major company, this should be your choice

The quintessential guide to interior design. It's nifty!
By A Customer
I thought I had pretty good taste when it comes to spiffing up the ol' homestead. Catherine Bailly Dunne showed me how hopelessly inept I really am. Her sense of style is a force unto itself. Colors and textures come alive with her inventive, yet simple flourishes. This book is ideal for beautifying any home, from a one-bedroom rathole to a multi-gabled country estate. Hats off to the author. Catherine, you've really dunne it this time!

A Fresh Perspective
By Kerri
This book makes you look at ALL the ways in which you make your home comfortable. It definitely does NOT advocate clutter, or that everything should be textured - it specifically talks about balancing textures. Perhaps some of the photos seem a little fussy, but this isn't about replicating the photos. It's the kind of book that you use to inspire you, not to follow step-by-step projects. The section on touch makes me yearn for silks and wicker and nubbly cottons around me. The section on scent gave me the nudge I needed to buy a rose-scented sachet I've been thinking of buying for ages - and it's beautiful to sit at my computer and smell that. The section on hearing made me realise how much I enjoy hearing my neighbour's windchimes on breezy days - perhaps that's something I shall be looking into next. An inspiring book to pick up and leaf through... to make you realise that decorating isn't just about how your home looks. Any showhome can LOOK good, but it's the ones which feel and smell and sound good which will really attract your attention!

A REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT DECORATING BOOK
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book and handles decorating your home from a refreshing perspective. Decorating should not be just about the way the sofa looks next to the fireplace, but also how you feel when you touch the fabric, how the color of the room motivates you or relaxes you, even how the house smells, how the whole effects your comfort level. Our homes are our refuge from the outside world and should be very personal and unique to ourselves. Those who do not understand this concept should get one of Martha Stewart's insipid books. This book has taught me to look at my home as a reflection of myself. Just as I do not dress to please others, from now on I will decorate my home to please only me. New home owners out there, buy this book now!

Dare to Prepare: How to Win Before You Begin, by Ronald M. Shapiro, Gregory Jordan

Over the course of a forty-year career in the worlds of law, sports, business, and politics, Ron Shapiro has worked with and advised an incredible variety of people. What he’s found is that the secret ingredient for getting into the winner’s circle is simply the discipline of methodical preparation: that old-school, step-by-step way of having all your ducks in a row, whether you are an executive getting ready to do a deal or make a speech; a pitcher studying the traits of opposing hitters and keeping a meticulous notebook of their strengths and weaknesses; an international trade negotiator who knows all about the issues and the people on the other side before sitting down at the table; or a surgeon who rehearses like a classical musician.

Deep down, you know you should do it. But how often do you wing it and fly by the seat of your pants because “Gosh, I don’t have time . . . I’ve done this before . . . I know what I’m doing”? It is obvious that you have to get ready for whatever game you’re playing, but all too frequently methodical preparation is the missing ingredient in today’s world of instant analysis, easy access to information, and glibness that sounds good at first but is unconnected with the reality at hand.

In Dare to Prepare, successful people such as wine guru Robert Parker, investment legend Bill Miller, pianist Leon Fleisher, Goldman Sachs partner Lisa Fontenelli, broadcaster Bob Costas, firefighter Ann Marie Tierney, New York Mets manager Willie Randolph, and many others share the way they apply discipline in preparing for career-changing games, deals, meetings, and interviews. Cal Ripken Jr. played thousands of games in the major leagues but prepared for each like it was his first. NPR host Liane Hansen has interviewed countless people but approaches each interview with the same meticulous research time and time again.

Make sure there are no slips “twixt cup and lip” as you get ready for your next personal or professional challenge by daring to prepare.

"As a psychiatrist and teacher I love this book. It does three things better than any other. It offers a thoughtful structure for thinking through a life problem to its solution. It provides stories with fascinating plots and outcomes which make each of the steps in the structure clear and memorable, and it promotes a feeling of relief through revealing to readers like me that we are not so different from everyone else in often failing to make a plan primarily because we're not sure how."
—Dr. Paul McHugh, Henry Phipps Prof of Psychiatry Emeritus, Johns Hopkins University

“Using interviews with "master preparers" and high achievers like Jets coach Eric Mangini, a heroic woman who battles wildfires, a high powered television executive, and historian Taylor Branch, Ron Shapiro shows how their preparation secrets, properly utilized, can pave the way to success. —Fred Wilpon, Chairman and CEO, New York Mets, and Chairman of Sterling Equities

“Ron Shapiro makes clear that–in any industry, in any sector, whatever the objective–there simply is no substitute for preparation. That is certainly true for educators. But it is the way this point is illustrated–with spare, precise advice from people who have learned in often-dramatic ways the age-old saw that failing to prepare is preparing to fail–that makes Dare to Prepare such an engaging, enjoyable, and ultimately indispensable read.” —Nancy S. Grasmick, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools

“Ron Shapiro, the torch bearer for the Power of Nice, reveals with great insight another key to success, the Power of Preparation. Vivid accounts from Ron’s career and the careers of an array of interesting people show convincingly that achieving positive outcomes through preparation applies to all personal interactions whether with family, friends, neighbors, or business.”
—Kurt Schmoke, Dean of Howard University School of Law, Former Mayor of Baltimore

“This is absolutely essential information for anyone from business leaders to business students. Ron Shapiro has done a wonderful job of immediately engaging the readers and never losing them, as he shares lessons learned about the value of preparing with deliberate purpose…the purpose to succeed. One only has to Dare to Prepare in order to stay ahead of the competition.”
—Dr. Kathy Player, Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Grand Canyon University

“Whether you are educating a sales force, managers, or front-line company representatives, or just looking to improve your own efficiency and success rate, this book is a great resource”
— John Cochran, Senior Executive, Bank of America Card Services

—Linda Ginzel, Clinical Prof of Managerial Psychology, The University of Chicago

“Ron Shapiro takes what you might think you know - the idea that it is wise to have a plan - and fills it brimful of life by showing how a wide variety of people actually act on the idea. A book with a chapter titled 'I would like to thank the Lord Jesus Christ and Eric Mangini' contains many delights.”
—George F. Will, Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper columnist, journalist, and author.

“Leadership is about responsibility. Accepting this responsibility changes the game in any leadership role......and being 'in charge' means you have an obligation to everyone you lead to be the best. Don't be fooled ....it all starts with preparedness. Ron Shapiro's Dare to Prepare finally captures that evasive element of leadership in a way that all leaders ...present and future....can utilize in reaching their goals. Bravo...required reading for any leader!”
—Jon Luther, Chairman and CEO, Dunkin’ Brands, Inc.

“Explicitly recognizing the importance of preparation and then learning from examples how to do it effectively can be tremendously valuable. Dare to Prepare is a great way to do this!”

PUT ME IN, COACH

You know the feeling--you first got it as a kid. Say you are a young musician taking lessons. You listen to your teacher play the piece for next week; you practice the most difficult chords with her; and you go home and nail it like Wynton Marsalis or Yo-Yo Ma. You tell yourself you've mastered it and decide to watch a sitcom instead of practicing more. You show up at your teacher's house seven days later, stretch your fingers, and utterly flub the recital.

Or say you're on the bench in youth basketball or in the Little League dugout, and you want to play. You can nail that shot; you can hit that pitcher. Coach turns to you; you get your chance; you rush in; and you miss the basket altogether or strike out on three pitches.

Most of you remember experiences like this as a kid. Comical or trite, they stick with you. And they serve as good analogies for trying to close a multimillion-dollar deal or sale, give a big presentation, do a negotiation, interview for a job, or pick a doctor. The exclamation "Put me in, Coach" didn't become a piece of Americana for nothing. It is the American way, in fact, to see or hear something done once and believe you can do it better. Immediately!

Whenever I hear John Fogerty's 1985 song "Centerfield," I laugh at the way I still feel the eagerness of a kid in the dugout when it comes to taking on a task. So hummable, the song captures the youthful zeal we can still feel when a big task is at hand. "Centerfield" became a favorite of my client and friend, the late Kirby Puckett, during the joyous ascent of the Minnesota Twins in the mid-1980s. Kirby had that Little League enthusiasm, and he made you feel as a fan that you could do it, too.

But let me tell you something: Kirby Puckett practiced, sportsese for "prepared," like his life depended on it. He was right up there with Cal Ripken Jr. in terms of a certain paranoia: I doubt either ever said "put me in, Coach" without feeling completely assured that he had prepared for all the possible dimensions of the at bat or of fielding the ball. Each man tempered his boyish zeal for the game with a studious devotion to preparation. On the scale of perspiration and inspiration, Cal and Kirby spent 50 percent of their time preparing and 50 percent performing. They perspired methodically during hours of practice and inspired monumentally when we were allowed to glimpse them perform.

For many reasons, the lionization of the master preparer seems to have waned. Performers are admired for their results, but not necessarily studied and emulated for their preparation. Enron was obviously a product of this do-it-quick culture. We live in what is perhaps the most results-driven era in history. Earnings, whether real or imagined, and performance, whether real or inflated, do not necessarily result from thorough preparation anymore. But, as a moralist at heart, I still believe that enduring success results from effective preparation. You can try to sneak around preparation, develop shortcuts, or come up with clever schemes. But succumbing to a shortcut culture will usually catch up with you.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS:

WHEN YOUR MOTHER OR

FATHER PREPARED LIKE THERE

WAS NO TOMORROW

Doting elders of my family told me that I was going to be president of the United States. Most of you probably got that treatment, too. I was president of my high school and college classes. I began to believe the incessant familial hype and couldn't wait to turn thirty-five to qualify. Put me in, Coach, I can be president.

Your head is filled with images of winners. Particularly during the technology boom of the late 1990s and the real estate boom of this decade, people were becoming multimillionaires like never before. Understandably, a lot of people want to skip steps and rush into fame and fortune.

It took a wise man to slow me down. Soon after law school my uncles and aunts started asking me for tax advice, and I would give them answers based upon what I had learned in my studies. But as a lawyer for whom I worked, Robby Goldman, said to me: "Don't give advice unless it is based on your knowledge and experience." Robby forced me to learn to think and know before I spoke. He essentially was saying that even his own instruction was insufficient unless I practiced it myself.

Preparation mentors never stop coming into your life; when I started the Shapiro Negotiations Institute, I was in my fifties. Mark Jankowski, my partner, was in his thirties. I recognized Mark's skills and generational advantages and looked to him as a mentor. He taught me how technology could help a business become more productive and organized. We tend to think of mentors as our elders, and this is usually the case. But I realized you could open yourself up to mentors of any age; their experience, and your lack of it, should be the determining factor.

The greatest preparation mentor I ever had was my father. He was an immigrant from Russia with a primary school education and winning business skills. He owned a plumbing supplies company. When I grew old enough to work for him, I expected I would fill in alongside him in the office with my fancy brain and new calculator. But he put me in the warehouse to help manage the inventory and delivery of pipes and fittings. I loaded and unloaded trucks in the summer heat.

He said to me: "To do this business right you have to understand the underbelly of it."

I resented it, just as many of you no doubt resented your father or your first boss making you pay your dues. I resented it for a long time.

And then one day I understood. He kept me from rushing into the game; he forced me to prepare.

The apprenticeship process seems to be fading. This is emblematic of a broader departure from preparation, as you are pressed to multitask and produce more work product. You feel forced to find shortcuts for doing things. We all want to get into the game sooner. Of course, people still wink at preparation and work ethic, but a wink or a nod isn't what my father and his preparation generation had in mind. Along the way, we're losing some of the satisfaction and thoroughness that came with good, old-fashioned preparation.

Like some of you, I was lucky to grow up a son of the preparation generation. The preparation ethic was easier to instill because there simply were fewer distractions or excuses available to avoid it. My dad taught me to ignore the impulse and pressure to say "put me in, Coach." In essence, his message was: don't curb your enthusiasm, but harness it with a method. And don't make excuses about why you can't.

THE THREE EXCUSES, OR, WHY WE SAY WE DON'T NEED TO PREPARE

There are three common excuses for not preparing methodically and thoroughly:

1.I don't have time.

2.I've done this before.

3.I know how to do this.

"I DON'T HAVE TIME!":

THE GOTTA GET IT DONE TRAP

You probably remember a high school teacher or college professor's admonishment: you that you actually save time at the back end of a paper or project by preparing more thoroughly at the front end.

After a few frustrating efforts, you probably realized they were right: you actually have a less frustrating experience and superior result by slowing down at the beginning in order to thoroughly outline that term paper or presentation.

It's good advice that everyone knows makes sense. Why don't we follow it? The answer, I think, has a lot to do with technology that pushes you to multitask and engage in our speed-dial way of life. You have tools for instant access and instant response. You are told you can do more in less time and several things at once, so you do. It is incredible how busy you feel, and how little of substance you sometimes feel you actually produce.

In fact, I think I remember from high school physics that the key difference between speed and velocity is direction. Speed can take you in any direction, including round and round in a circle; velocity has a fixed direction. A preparation method transforms your excess speed into velocity. It harnesses your energy into direction.

Multitaskers are speedy. You're working your BlackBerry, cell phone, and computer; you're reading the stock market results; you're glancing at the newspaper--all at once. I actually used to read the newspaper at ball games or in the morning while I drove the car. So in my case, multitasking was not only a threat to the quality of my work, but to my clean driving record and health!

Once upon a time, e-mail was supposed to allow you to respond to some people on your own time. You could wait to respond to the e-mails until you were ready and had reflected on their queries or issues. Then along came the BlackBerry. E-mails acquired the urgency of phone calls.

Even recently I would leave the BlackBerry in vibration mode when I was in a meeting or even giving a speech. And nine times out of ten I would know who was calling and switch with the multitasker's second mind to think about the issue facing the caller while speaking to a dozen people in a conference room!

I still have concentration issues, and I've struggled with them since I was a young, up-and-coming multitasker. There was a television in my room and I would do my homework with it on. I had a little trick--a string on the off switch that I would pull when I heard my father's footsteps coming down the hall. I was already multitasking because of the intrusion of technology into my life.

Multitasking can result from technology or from peer pressure or from sheer hyperactivity. But you've got to shut it down and restore the methodical steps of preparation to turn speed into velocity. A preparation checklist (like the Preparation Principles Checklist in the appendix of this book) will help you do this and probably reduce your blood pressure along the way.

The heartening fact is that you will not only make fewer mistakes, but you will also enjoy what you do more. You will feel less rushed; you will feel like you have more time. And you will be able to say with confidence instead of arrogance: put me in, Coach!

The Two Powers of Nice--How Can That Be?

A recent coincidence reinforced my belief in the importance of methodical preparation. My first book, The Power of Nice, was about negotiations and was translated into four languages. My consulting firm, the Shapiro Negotiations Institute, trademarked the title of the book and still uses it as the program title in some of our courses. The title became a fundamental part of our brand and was closely associated with our consulting.

So I was surprised one day in the early summer of 2006 to receive a call from a friend who had read in Newsweek magazine about another forthcoming book entitled The Power of Nice. How could this be, I wondered? Was someone blatantly exploiting our trademarked phrase? Was it an effort to appropriate our brand?

I read the article and learned that the authors were the executives of Kaplan Thaler Limited, the advertising group in New York City. They were probably best known as the creators of the winning Aflac duck advertisements in which the woeful duck is always getting abused.

Although the article pointed to their Power of Nice as more of a life advice book (so not competitive with mine in terms of content), this was still an important issue for me and my firm. But, as usual, I was busy--about to leave with my wife on a vacation in Oregon. Adding to the time pressure was the fact that my partner Mark Jankowski was caring for his wife who had experienced a devastating illness. I just didn't have the time to dig into the matter and knew what I wanted to do right away. I told myself: I don't have time to deal with this!

So I contacted the authors to ask them to consider using a different title that would not confuse readers with my book and my company's trademarked product. When I made the call, I hadn't fully prepared my strategy or scripted the conversation. The response from the person I spoke with was not good, and I was treated in a way that made me feel a wee bit like the abused and underappreciated Aflac duck.

During the call I was sitting in my office looking down at Baltimore's harbor. Water encourages reflection, and I realized--and not for the first time--that I had failed to practice what I preach.

By not sitting down with my team and thoroughly assessing the situation with a preparation method, I failed to methodically define my objectives, understand the other party's interests, forecast potential outcomes, and write a script to prepare for my encounter.

Now, I had plenty of good excuses to have rushed things. But no excuse is good enough to account for not preparing. Fortunately, it is never too late to prepare. Mark helped me recognize my error, and I rededicated myself and my team to preparing methodically. We analyzed the matter with the preparation checklist.

Methodical preparation transformed us from ugly ducks into well-prepared negotiators. We requested a copy of the authors' book in draft form and confirmed that the substance of each book was very different. We determined that the authors did not plagiarize our writing and ideas, but used a title without researching its prior use. And we realized we could propose a settlement that would avoid litigious nonsense and instead bring us a bit of a win from their book. Mark helped me to look at the issue succinctly when he said in an e-mail: "In order to continue to expand the brand of The Power of Nice, we will try to leverage a settlement agreement with these authors into an even higher profile for our book and concept."

By heeding my own advice and preparing methodically, we got the result we wanted. Kaplan Thaler agreed to acknowledge us and our trademark on its book's website with a link to our negotiations site; the authors mentioned the distinction between the two books in their book, and they provided other disclaimers. All of these concessions turned into additional marketing for a book that we published eight years ago. By scrutinizing our objectives, we prepared a proposal that made more sense than fighting over four simple words. By abandoning the excuse of having no time to prepare, I was able to aid our cause more effectively.

Too shallow
By A reader
This book is typical of many business books written by consultants or practitioners who have worked with high-profile celebrities and executives. The author(s) recount the anecdotal specifics of their experiences without translating them into a set of first principles for the concepts or methods they are writing about.
The first chapter of this book provides a nice motivational pep-talk on the importance of preparation. Beyond that, you don't get a lot more out of the book than what you would by reviewing the table of contents. The bulk of each chapter is dedicated to three stories meant to reinforce the subject of the chapter. However, the author doesn't tie these examples back to a set of principles that would better define the concept or method he is discussing. For example, in the chapter "Do a Timeline", he should address specifics such as, what are the essentials of a good timeline? What considerations should be made for the level of detail in a timeline? What are a few techniques for breaking down the work or tasks? His chapter on "Write the Script" had all kinds of potential since I haven't come across that particular idea in other books (as it relates to project preparation).
However, he never really describes the essentials that make up this script. Mr. Shapiro obviously has a rich set of experiences to draw upon. Unfortunately, he needs to develop a set of universal or first principles that define his approach to the general business case.

"You do not have a lot of time."
By CodeMaster Talon
I desperately needed this book. Not because I'm not successful; I've won many awards in my field and the last time my employer made me take a cognitive test I astonished them by getting a perfect score. No, I needed this book because I want something more. I want the next level up, the bigger stage. You know the level I'm talking about, the big-gun level. And on that level, as one person in this wonderful books states, "EVERYONE is talented." You have to be more than just talented, you have to be prepapred.

And so we have "Dare to Prepare", a brilliant distillation of the anatomy of success. The book urges to you to prepare until failure is not a possibilty, and to not waste time in the wrong types of preparation. I will not outline the tips here, as they so beautifully intergrate into the whole. People from all professions are interviewed, people with nothing in common except wild success and serious, serious preparation skills. The steps to being fully prepared for opportunity if it comes knocking and even if it doesn't flow perfectly into one another; I can safely say there isn't anyone who wouldn't benefit from following them, no matter how good you may think you already are.

That's pretty much it. A short review for me, but there isn't much more I can say. I picked up the book on a whim, began reading before bed in an effort to fall asleep, and ten minutes later was wide-awake, completely wired. Shapiro's little masterpiece will excite you, inspire you, and guide you like nothing I've read in a very long time. And in the Codemaster's book, that gets "Dare to Prepare" the rarely bestowed-

Entertaining Stories & Tangible Tools
By Kris Wallace
Success stories from the people interviewd by the authors are what makes this book really come to life. Even though the people profiled in this book are from so many diverse professions, the power of preparation carries each of them to the top. I especially like the book's core philosophy - preparation is the only aspect over a situation that one has control. Shapiro and Jordan have cleanly mapped out a systematic approach to preparation that everyone can put into place immediately after finishing this book. They even give you the preparation checklist as an appendix. I use it for every one of my sales calls, and I have noticed a BIG increase in confidence, which has allowed me to close more deals.

Dare to Prepare is probably the single most useful how to book I have ever read. And the stories are entertaining, so in addition to the tangible tools the book lends, it is also a quick read. If you're looking to improve upon your confidence so that you can perform at a higher level, check out this book.
