Perhaps it's the relative youth of the medium, but there's something about film that inspires the endless creation of lists. In the latest attempt at canon making, the National Society of Film Critics has compiled 100 of the most essential not necessarily best films of all time. Each choice is defended in a brief essay by a prominent critic like Peter Travers, Morris Dickstein or J. Hoberman. The films range from predictable giants Metropolis, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Bonnie and Clyde, Star Wars, The Godfather to more idiosyncratic selections like The Exorcist and Schindler's List. The critics convincingly argue that there is something artistically important about each of these pictures. The essays are often personal (with a refreshing absence of grandiloquent commentary), making the choices hard to dispute, even though heated debates are precisely what the book means to inspire. Dave Kehr's piece on Birth of a Nation and Eleanor Ringel's on Gone with the Wind show why these films, as racist as they are, deserve inclusion. Among the personal anecdotes is Roger Ebert's recollection of seeing The Battleship Potemkin, the classic Soviet revolutionary film, outdoors on a summer night in Michigan. While not every film lover will devour it cover to cover, these individual takes on old favorites make this good reading and a handy resource.

These two volumes by Ebert, possibly America's most famous film critic, and by the American Association of Film Critics, a group that includes Ebert essentially define the canon of American film studies. Both volumes provide short essays on 100 different films. Although one list has been chosen by a group of film writers and critics after much discussion and dissent and the other is a highly personal compendium of "landmarks of the first century of cinema," the lists are stunningly similar. Together, they provide a survey of the American and foreign films that have provoked the most interest in American film critics. It would be fair to note that American films dominate, with American productions accounting for 50-60 percent of the titles in both volumes and the rest of the world being represented by an assortment of European works and a handful of Asian films. Ebert's essays are culled from his weekly feature in the Chicago Sun Times (check out the paper's web site to read the essays); The A List entries are written by a number of well-known film writers, including Carr, Andrew Sarris, Robert Sklar, and Armond White. The essays in both books are well written, accessible, and, in many cases, thought-provoking. Whether both books are necessary purchases is another matter. It is unlikely that any moderately comprehensive collection will need another couple of essays about Citizen Kane; 2001, A Space Odyssey; or Battleship Potemkin. However, the collections do discuss many lesser-known films, such as Dance, Girl Dance; Happy Together; and the British "Up" documentaries, and so could be a wonderful introduction to 20th-century cinema for the general reader. Both books are recommended for academic and public libraries, though the fact that Ebert's essays have already been published and in circulation for some years recommends The A List over The Great Movies if a choice has to be made. Discover Great Films

There can never be a definitive list of the 100 greatest movies ever made that satisfies everyone, but this particular list has a lot going for it. Each film is alloted about three pages of commentary that deals with the origins of the film, why critics love it, why it has endeared itself to the general public, what is so significant about it in the context of film history. All the essays are great fun to read before and after watching a particular film. I have made it an ambition to watch as many of these films as are available on VHS and DVD. (I have so far seen about 60+ movies on the list). The list is commendably broad-based, with a fair number of Asian and European films. Yes, the usual suspects are there (Citizen Kane, Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia), but, if for nothing else, I must thank this book for having introduced me, someone who is not a student of film, to films and film-makers I hadn't even heard of before, but who have since established a place in my heart. It was here that I discovered Carl Dreyers' powerful film The Passion of Joan of Arc, and Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story, which is the most sublimely beautiful movie I have ever seen. Surprisingly, the critics have steered clear of being too arcane in their choices; there are nods here to B-movies, Hollywood musicals, Hong Kong martial arts flicks, summer blockbusters, westerns, science fiction. Rather than being a list of the GREATEST (Enter the Dragon! Jailhouse Rock!), this is really a list of the most INFLUENTIAL films across a range of genres. So you will find one or two representatives of German expressionism, Italian neo-realism, French New Wave, Russian montage, film-noir, etc., but you can easily think of many films that, aesthetically, are greater than some of the movies on this list but have not been included because they are not considered as influential. How else can you explain the inclusion of ,say, Close Encounters of the Third Kind but not Apocalypse Now? Perhaps the latter was left out because Coppola already has Godfather on the list. (But Federico Fellini has three of his films included, Spielberg and Kurosawa two each.) I would have liked to see a Jacques Tati film represented, and also one from Indian Bollywood. Overall, if you treat this as a guide that leads you to discover more films that are not on the list, then you will open up before you a wonderful world of films not restricted to just Hollywood.

I love this book. I got it a couple years ago, and it never stays on my shelf. Every few weeks I pull it down to read the essay on a movie I've just seen or to get ideas for another movie to rent. I admire the National Society of Film critics for picking some unusual choices. Some so unusual that it's hard to find the films.
I recommend this book to any film buff, or to anyone that wants to become a film buff. It's a great place to start.

Many hours of mind challenging fun

As a self professed film fan, I bought this book browsing though a store's shelves. I am so lucky to have picked it because this book (along with a subscription to Netflix) has brought me hours of mind challenging enjoyment. I can't think of a better way to explore the history of film outisde of a classroom setting.

The Edward Porter Alexander of the Union Army
Colonel Charles S. Wainwright, artillerist, is the Edward Porter Alexander of the Union army. His recollections from 1861-1865, as presented in A Diary of Battle edited by Allan Nevins, is an amazing in-depth memoir of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of someone who fought in most of the major battles of the Army of the Potomac. He was for all practical purposes Confederate Col E.P. Alexander's Union memoir counterpart. He knew all the major figures and did not hesitate to comment on each one. He held nothing back, writing in explicit and descriptive prose. His analysis of both battles and personalities is both insightful and illuminating.
This is a must read for anyone who wants to get a more in-depth understanding of the real American Civil War from a front line participant.
Highly recommended especially for serious Civil War buffs.

A Diary of Battle

Gets low marks for editing. The editor has excised parts he thinks are repetitive or boring, but in some cases these clearly dealt with the technical details of handling artillery, and would have been of great use to the reader.
The colonel of the 1st NY Artillery, Wainwright is interesting as an anti-abolitionist and a fan of McClellan up to the very end. His comment that he wouldn't trust Massachusetts or Pennsylvania not to secede if conditions were reversed (p. 207) is interesting, reflecting the strong allegiance to state in the North as well as the South. His views on the cynicism of abolitionists are intriguing as well; he believed that the radicals were deliberately prolonging the war to gain political power. His account of the fighting on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg is quite detailed.

great compact maps to the city

We've just returned from Barcelona, having brought several pocket guides with us -- this one was the lightest to carry and had the best maps. The city is divided into six sections, each with short descriptions of several attractions and restaurants, and each with a fol-out map to that section. These maps were included metro stops, street names and the places listed, and were augmented by small color photographs. Attraction and restaurant listings include hours, prices and telephone numbers/ The front and back covers fold-out also and give general and metro information and some hotel listings. We found this little guide to be fairly useful, but particularly liked the maps.

7. There's an updated full color subway map in the back matter.
6. Every restaurant and cafe we tried on a whim served delicious food and didn't ever disappoint.
5. Days and hours of opening are listed on every venue listed. This is very important since Barcelona stores hold erratic business hours.
4. Basic information on day trips outside Barcelona is listed in the front matter.
3. The thumbnail size photos while not great do provide a quick impression of the venue listed.
2. All explanation are short and to the point, making it easier to read while you're on the road.

That said, I recommend supplementing this pocket guide with something more substantive like Frommer's walks of Barcelona that give more detailed and poignant explanations of historical attractions, and give you an itinerary that prioritizes what you should see.

I brought 5 Barcelona books with me for the trip. This was the only one I carried around throughout my stay there. Great fold out maps and color coded to easily find your destination. It's small and compact, easily fit into a coat jacket or a purse.

About the Author
Keith Morris is a cofounding member of Black Flag, the most recognizable name in West Coast punk, and the Circle Jerks, which cemented his reputation at the forefront of hardcore vocalists. He has recorded over fifteen albums, appeared on countless albums and compilations, and has a half-dozen film credits to his name. The intensity of the music produced by his latest bands OFF! and FLAG are equal to his best work from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, and add to a legendary career that is still being carved out one gig at a time.

Jim Ruland caught the punk rock virus when his mom took him to see the Ramones when he was 15. He has been writing for punk rock zines like Flipside since the early ’90s and has written for every issue of Razorcake, America’s only non-profit independent music fanzine. He is the author of the award-winning novel Forest of Fortune and the short story collection Big Lonesome and is the curator of the irreverent reading series Vermin on the Mount.

Keith i'm so proud of you .The book is so great. You have no problem telling about stuff you feel bad about doing and all the tales were great to listen to as well as the history lesson. Your Raiders still suck and my Cowboys rule Keith. I have known Keith awhile not real close or anything but had his phone number and he came to shows I booked and its always a pleasure to talk to Keith as he is so energetic and like me a smartass in a good way and you know how you stand. He is way nice though ,has great taste in all kinds of music ..This book has taught me so much more about him and the L.A. punk scene. Who knew one day Darby Crash saved his life. This is about the most honest book you'll ever read etc.. I could not let it down and found myself reading it even as I had tooth picks in my eyelids to stay up! This book is a masterpiece and all fans of not just punk but rock music should read..Great book about one of the most insightful passionate punks I've ever met...Sash

I've been reading lots of non-fiction/oral history/auto-biographical books about the punk scene for years. Usually I pick at them here and there when I've got nothing else to do and it takes me weeks to eventually finish them. My Damage is one that I read very quickly. Not often I find myself reading a book at 7AM on a Sunday morning, but that's what happened with this. (The kitties woke me up for their breakfast and then rather than go back to sleep...) It has a great chronological momentum that just kept pulling me along, made it a pleasure to go through its 200+ pages.

I got into punk in 1982 and the Circle Jerks were one of the first bands I glommed on to and claimed as my own, and I still listen to them now and again to this day. Keith is a real character and his story is real, and interesting. Real interesting. Ahem. Anyway, I loved it and think it might be a good read for someone even if they aren't a fan.

I also recommend as a companion piece the Circle Jerks documentary DVD 'My Career As a Jerk.'

I start a ridiculous amount of books and usually get about half way through before I move on to the next. Last night I finished a whole book! Maybe its the soberness or maybe its just a great story of someones life. Either way, pick up Keith Morris' book My Damage. Thanks for sharing your story Keith. A nice complement to more chronological works

Knowing the Dead history is helpful when reading this book, as if skips around to important points in the band's career. But having said that it is an excellent second book for those interested in the band.

Deeply Reported and Well Told

The first thing to note about So Many Roads is how deeply reported it is. After contacting David Lemieux about this project, David Browne had access to the Dead's remaining members and inner circle. He didn't squander the opportunity. In this book, he brings forward a great deal of new material based on those interviews, and he contextualizes it in new and interesting ways. (For example, his interviews with Barbara Meier show how the Cuban missile crisis provided the backdrop for Jerry Garcia's "live for the moment" lifestyle.) Even aficionados will find plenty of new insights into the band and its experience.

Browne also chose a unique way to structure his book. Instead of offering a continuous narrative, which has been done many times before, he selected seventeen days that were either turning points for the band or somehow illustrated its development. He then back-filled important information to ensure the coverage was adequate. So, for example, his seventeen days don't include the one Jerry Garcia died, but he makes sure readers know about that event and its key details. That structure allows him to bring certain moments into sharp focus without sacrificing a broader view of the band's history.

The coverage is fairly evenly distributed over the band's three decades, but most of what I learned about the Dead from this book was set in the 1980s and 1990s. Browne doesn't shrink from the challenge of Garcia's health problems, including the details of his addiction, during this period, but he never lets that topic hijack the narrative. His musical acumen (he writes for Rolling Stone) also informs the book throughout.

I relished this book and recommend it highly.
