They share a focus on neurotransmitters in cortical function, where we presume higher mental events originate. Professor Jasper has made contributions to the understanding of three different classes of neuro­ transmitters: GABA, acetylcholine, and catecholamines. It is an interest in trying to link neu­ rochemical events to some aspects of complex brain function and behavior that has characterized his work, and it is this philosophy that led to the present symposium to honor him. Not just for clinicians...

Calvin Colarusso, MD, of the University of California (San Diego) School of Medicine, is a recognised expert in the field of human behavioural development. This relatively brief book (just over 200 pages) is one of the first clinically-relevant texts to give a survey of both child and adult development. Colarusso works this development together in the text as a continuous stream from birth to death, looking at all of the relevant factors and most of the major theories regarding development at each stage.
From the forward, Dr. Sherwyn Woods writes: 'Developmental theory is the essence of any psychodynamic psychotherapy, and certainly of psychoanalysis. It is through an understanding of progressive life events, and the way these events relate to associated biological and social events, that we come to understand both psychopathology and psychological strengths... This book should be of great interest to all students of human behaviour as well as to seasoned clinicians.'
Colarusso begins with an historical overview and some general guiding principles of child development. He gives definitions and contexts in which concepts will be explored. He shows at the beginning some of the key differences in child development and adult development (egocentricity, sexual immaturity/maturity, cognitive and emotional ability and stability, etc.), and introduces the idea of the developmental lines. He repeats a similar chapter introducing an historical overview and general principles of adult development at the start of that section. Here he concentrates much more on the specific theorists (pioneers such as Van Gennep, Freud, Jung, and Erikson; contemporaries such as Levinson, Vaillant, Nemiroff, and Colarusso), as well as an examination of ideas such as the effects of aging and the influence of biological and psychological factors on normal adult development.
At the outset of each of the broad sections, Colarusso also presents a chapter on diagnostic processes and tools -- including evaluation and collection of data, reliability of data, appropriate and extraneous data (what to note, what to ignore), and the appropriateness of various questioning techniques and tools.
Colarusso breaks his child development chapters in to the following stages: the Oral phase (ages 0-1), the Anal phase (ages 1-3), the Oedipal phase (ages 3-6), Latency (ages 6-11), and adolescence (ages 12-20). These stages are not set in stone, but normal development always progresses through these stages. Various researchers break these stages apart differently, or have different terminology for the stages; within the chapters, Colarusso examines these as well. For example, in the chapter on the Oral phase, Colarusso presents the ideas of Mahler (separation-individuation theory stages), Spitz (psychic organiser stages), ideas of Anna Freud, Piaget, Stoller, Kohut, and Stern.
While the stages of child development share great similarity if not the same interpretations, the stages of adult development are less clear. Erikson divides adulthood into 20-year blocks of time (young adult, middle adult, late adulthood), which Colarusso uses for his topically break-points, but explores the sub-categories introduced by others such as Gould and Levinson.
Colarusso presents theoretical frameworks as well as case studies. He does not embark on grand defenses of one theoretical framework over another, but rather seeks to illustrate those parts of each that have proven most useful in a clinical context.
As a pastoral care provider, I am pleased to have historical and theoretical underpinning and a survey of differing ideas, but even more pleased that the focus is on practical assistance, so that those ideas may be made useful.
I recommend this book to anyone who seeks a greater understanding of human behaviour and development. Don't let the idea of a 'clinical' and 'medical' textbook dissuade you. This is an important book for anyone who want to understand others. I would also recommend the book to parents (so as to better understand childhood development).

To my way of thinking, the spark that ignited the explosion of re­ search in this field was struck at the First International Colloquium on Rhabdoviruses, attended by 30 or so participants in Roscoff, France, in June 1972.

Quintessential Review of the Chemistry & Pharmacology of Opioid Analgesics

This comprehensive, thoroughly referenced treatment of opioid analgesics is relevant and applicable even today (25 years after its publication), given the rapidly burgeoning research of the past 40+ years on agonist-antagonist analgesics and opioid receptors. The authors have surpassed their stated aim, "to afford medicinal scientists an entry into the chemistry and biological activity of morphine and related compounds."

Very few researchers are more qualified to review the 100+ years of opioid chemistry/pharmacology than the authors of this title, Alan F. Casy and Robert T. Parfitt. A. F. Casy has dedicated his entire 60+ year career to the field of opioid research and has published hundreds of papers in the peer-reviewed literature during this time. R. T. Parfitt has dedicated much of his career to the study of opioids as well. At the time this book was published, I can think of only a few other researchers who were equally qualified to author such a comprehensive review. These include some of the heaviest hitters in the opioid research community, such as Philip S. Portoghese, Nathan B. Eddy, Kenneth W. Bentley, Everette L. May, Paul A.J. Janssen, and Daniel Lednicer.

An introductory chapter that briefly covers definitions, testing methods, side effects, pharmacokinetics, and biochemical and bibliographical aspects is followed by 4,5-Epoxymorphinans, not surprisingly, the most extensive chapter of the book. Chapters 3-5, concerned with, respectively, morphinans, benzomorphans, and the interesting but little-investigated 5-arylmorphans, follow logically for reasons of genesis and structural similarities. The next three chapters treat piperidine-type analgesics (pethidine and related 4-phenylpiperidine analgesics-6; further analgesics based on piperidine and related azabicycloalkanes: prodines, promedols, profadol, and their derivatives-7; fentanyl and the 4-anilinopiperidino group of analgesics-8). Methadone and related 3,3-diphenylpropylamines constitute Chapter 9 while enkephalins, endorphins, and other opioid peptides are given good coverage in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 deals with miscellaneous groups of analgesics (atypical structural types, e.g., benzimidazoles, tetrahydroisoquinolines, arylcyclohexylamines, aminotetralins, etc.). The final two chapters on antagonists, dualists (agonist-antagonists), and Kappa agonists (12) and opioid receptors (13) are particularly scholarly and should evoke widespread interest. Throughout, molecular geometry (especially optical isomerism) and structure-activity analyses and interrelationships are emphasized.

Major criticisms of the book are the lack of coverage of non-Mu opioids and the price. Coverage of opioid ligands acting at the Kappa and Delta opioid receptors was lacking. Only a single 39-page chapter was devoted to topics such as partial opioid agonist-antagonists, antagonists, dualists and Kappa agonists. With partial agonist-antagonists, mixed agonists, and Delta/Kappa ligands comprising a significant portion of opioid research over the past 25+ years, it is surprising that so little content was devoted to such topics. As far as the price is concerned, for a 540-page book, a list price of $299 is unreasonable. As a result, I have posted a free eBook version of this book on Scribd. About the Author
After studying physics at the University of Vienna, Siegmar Roth carried out his thesis work at the reactor center in Seibersdorf, Austria, and received his PhD at the Institute of Professor Erich Schmid. From 1968 to 1970 he worked at the Siemens Research Laboratories in Erlangen, Germany, on the solid-state physics of novel semiconductors. After a three-year stay at the High Flux Reactor of the Institute Laue Langevin and four years at the High-Field Magnet Laboratory, both in Grenoble, France, where his research centered on superconductors, he joined the Max-Planck-Institut fur Festkorperforschung in Stuttgart, Germany.
He is currently head of the Synthetic Nanostructures Group in von Klitzing's department. In addition, he is Senior Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CEO of Sineurop Nanotech GmbH Stuttgart, and Scientific Advisor to Shanghai Yangtze Nanomaterials.

David Carroll carried out his thesis work at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, USA, receiving his PhD in 1993. At the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelp hia, his postdoctoral work focused on the application of scanning probes to oxide surfaces. After this, he joined Prof. Ruhle's group at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Metallforschung in Stuttgart, Germany. For two years there, his work centered on the application of scanning probes to interface studies and supported nanostructures. From Stuttgart, he became an assistant professor at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA.
Professor Carroll now heads the Nanotechnology group at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
