Making Magic for Paper!
By lar_student
I stumbled across this book and thoroughly enjoyed following along with the instructions in this book. The easy to follow instructions helped me to transform a regular sheet of paper into something truly magical. It was a delight to read through and then to make my own creations. The author encourages experimentation and exploration of the paper throughout the entire process.Of course, some parts were frustrating to make simply because I was unaccustomed to these designs. But that's to be expected, especially when trying to learn completely new things.

For those bored or for those who are serious about finding new ideas for greeting cards or personal projects, this book is highly recommended!

Excellent collection which stands the test of time
By Rex Chickeneater
Craig McGregor's edited collection is more than 35 years old, yet seems fresher and more balanced than many Dylan-worship items issued in today's marketplace. The book contains a wonderful range of items, starting with Robert Shelton's famous "New York Times" review in September 1961 that drew attention to the unknown performer and ending with an early 1970s essay by Wilfrid Mellers which meanders but is occasionally brilliant. Between these works are worthwhile interviews and feature articles by writers such as Nat Hentoff, Paul Nelson, Ralph G. Gleason, Robert Christgau, Lillian Roxon, and Nora Ephron. Some of the best Dylan interviews done by Jon Landau and John Cohen & Happy Traum are included, as are interesting items such as the New York Times articles announcing Dylan's motorcycle accident and related cancelation of a concert at Yale. The book is arranged chronologically, with Dylan's albums serving as the organizing framework. Overall, the book covers the key period of Dylan's career (though certainly by no means the only productive or important phase of his artistry), and it gives the reader a clear idea of changing public perceptions of Dylan, as well as Dylan's own remarkable development and transformation as a writer, singer, and performer. The book is well worth tracking down.

Portrait of a legend when he was earning the title
By A Customer
This book compiles much of the best writing done about Bob Dylan in the '60's, when he was in the midst of what is perhaps the greatest burst of creativity by a musical artist in this century. Includes interviews from the Village Voice and Playboy, and lengthy, perceptive essays on an artist whose music holds up to infinite levels of analysis. The rather dated quality of these essays and interviews is what gives them their beauty. These articles were written when all of this was new and no one knew where he was going or where he would take us. Dylan was not the grizzled bluesman he is today, but an absolute force of nature in his mid twenties; a kid from Minnesota who became the axis of popular culture. It is generally acknowledged that the directions that rock took in the '60's sprang directly from him. And he often changed directions every few months. For example, John Wesley Harding, released at the height of the psychedelic era, was a quiet, acoustic album, which in turn led the Beatles toward a similar sound for the White Album

You As Caregiver

We have talked about many of the issues you may encounter in caring for your parents. Now let’s focus on you, the caregiver. You are managing many responsibilities, personally and probably professionally, and balancing the needs of many people. You may wonder where the time you used to have for yourself has gone. It’s not uncommon to experience feelings of anger, guilt, frustration, stress, worry and doubt. You are making important decisions, dealing with family personalities, managing limited amounts of time, manoeuvreing through administrative red tape, taking care of your family and continuing to work. You are also trying to come to terms with the fact that your parents are in need and may be in pain, and may even be coming to the end of their lives.

If you are to be successful as a caregiver in safeguarding your parents’ health, you must look after yourself mentally and physically. Strive for a balance between your role as a caregiver and the other roles in your life. In this chapter we’ll talk about

• how being a caregiver develops your personal skills
• how the stress of caregiving can affect your health
• how good time management skills can help you and your family
• how to balance home, work and caregiving responsibilities
• support options through work and government assistance
• ways you can look after yourself
• the importance of fostering personal support systems
• the role of respite care.

Being the Caregiver

Being the caregiver for your aging parents requires not only your time but also the ability to develop new skills and draw on skills that you may already use in your job or family life. You need to be able to plan ahead, manage your time, and identify and assemble information to accomplish tasks. How much support you receive in your role as caregiver can greatly affect how you feel about the responsibilities. If you’re getting practical assistance and emotional encouragement from family and/or the community, you will perceive your role as caregiver in a more positive way.

Your reasons for having taken on the role also affect the type of caregiver you are and how you will perceive the tasks you perform for your parents. For many of us our feelings of love for our parents and the knowledge that they sacrificed for us gives us a sense of responsibility for our parents. We make the choice, even if unconsciously in the early stages, because of everything we feel our parents have given us throughout our lives. But some adult children do not have a strong relationship with their parents and do the caregiving out of a sense of guilt and obligation. Regardless of your reason for taking on this important task, you need to look after yourself in order to care for your parents.

Dealing with Stress

We encounter varying degrees of stress throughout our lives, and being able to identify it is the start to understanding what we need to do to get through it. Stress is not only mentally draining but can result in physical symptoms as well, manifesting itself as headache, upset stomach, disrupted sleep, anger at others, confusion and anxiety. Stress can also make it harder for you to fight off disease, because it lowers your immune system. And it can drain your energy. Whether the tasks you face are small, like picking up a prescription for your parents during a hectic day, or large, like previewing long-term care facilities, as a caregiver you should learn to identify the signs of stress.

Self-awareness is important. Trust yourself and your abilities. Know yourself and your reactions so that you can recognize when you are reaching your limit. Acknowledge the feelings that you are having as you look after your parents. Don’t put off making decisions as this can increase stress. And don’t put off doing tasks, as they will be on your mind until they are completed. Delegate tasks to others whenever possible but especially when you need to take a break. Use your time management skills to balance the responsibilities of caregiving with the responsibilities of your life.

Time Management

Good time management skills will help reduce stress and allow you to find some time for yourself.

Realistically, there will be times when your parents will require urgent attention and their needs cannot be dictated by a schedule. Sometimes you will feel there is not enough time in the day to get your parents everything they need. Or you will feel that things seem not to move fast enough. Recognizing that you can’t always control your time can help reduce stress.

TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS

• Keep a calendar that combines your appointments with those of your parents.
• Maintain a to-do list and prioritize items.
• Streamline your finances. Pay bills by automatic withdrawal or use online banking.
• Hold regular meetings of the immediate family to delegate tasks.
• Combine errands to save time.
• Designate a family communication centre, where you keep phone messages, the family calendar and special instructions.
• Be clear with instructions and leave written notes if required.
• Create a list of days and times when extended family are available to help, so that you can schedule tasks for them too.
• Develop effective communication systems within your extended family (e.g., a phone tree, group e-mails).
• Prepare for each day the night before (lay out clothes, gather paperwork, know the day’s schedule).
• Book time for yourself in order to avoid burnout and to give yourself something to look forward to.

Balancing Caregiving and Your Home Life

When you take on the responsibility of being a caregiver for your parents, you do not give up all the other responsibilities in your life. Trying to balance caregiving for aging parents with family and home obligations can be a significant cause of stress. When you overextend yourself trying to manage everything, you feel that you’re not taking care of anything properly. Recognizing that you can’t do it all, and finding other solutions to getting things done will lessen the burden.

Family Meals
Ensuring everyone in the house is getting fed can be a challenge if you have to be with your parents for long periods of time or if you need to be with them during mealtimes. This can cause feelings of guilt because you are not at home caring for your family. Completing caregiving tasks may make it difficult for you to get your own errands, such as grocery shopping, done. Sharing tasks and establishing routines will lessen your responsibilities and reduce your stress.

TIPS FOR MEAL PREPARATION
• Prepare meals for the week in advance and freeze.
• Try commercially prepared frozen meals.
• Find out if there are companies in your area that offer fresh, prepared meals requiring limited cooking time.
• Have a running grocery list posted to which everyone in the household can add items.
• Order groceries online.
• Ask other family members to help with shopping and meal preparation.
• Combine shopping trips with your parents’ errands.
• Have older children do the grocery shopping.
• Encourage kids to help make meals for the family or selves.
• Order take out periodically.
• Talk with partner about taking on more cooking responsibility.

When in crisis
• Have a service such as Meals on Wheels deliver to your home.
• Arrange for children to eat at a friend’s or neighbour’s house.

Housework
Maintaining a house is also stressful. You have to learn to let go of some of the expectations that things need to be perfect. Prioritize the housework and decide where to focus your energy. Don’t feel guilty if you decide to hire outside help.

Balancing Caregiving and Work Life

Another difficult aspect of caregiving is trying to keep up with the demands of your job, especially when caregiving in itself seems to be a full-time job! Depending on the stage of care you are at with your parents, you can investigate various workplace options to reduce the pressure. Only you can determine at what point you should have a discussion with your supervisor about your situation. If you’re lucky, you have a work environment that can accommodate your situation so that you don’t need to take extended leave time until your parents require you full time.

You may also want to take the opportunity to let your supervisor know how much information about your circumstances you would like them to share with your co-workers and how much should remain confidential.

An increasing number of companies are recognizing that outside stresses have an impact on an employee’s ability to work productively. As the caregiving community grows, companies should acknowledge the need for change in the workplace to accommodate their employees who are also caregivers to aging parents. Over the past few years, many workplaces have adapted to employees with children; similarly, employers should take into consideration the needs of employees who are caregivers to the elderly.

GETTING HELP AT WORK

Investigate these work options:
• flexible working hours
• job sharing
• working from home
• temporary reduction of your workload
• adjusting work assignments for later deadlines.

Government Assistance
When the time comes that your parents require intensive care, you may want to consider taking an extended leave from work. Check with your supervisor or your human resource department to see if you have any benefits available to you through your company. You can also take a compassionate care leave that is offered through the federal government under the Employment Standards Act. It allows you to take a maximum of six weeks off work to provide care for a gravely ill family member. You can get more details and find out how to apply through the Services Canada website (see our Senior and Caregiver Resource Guide for contact information).

Employment standards vary across provinces so check with your provincial government or talk to human resources at your workplace. For example, in Ontario a family medical leave covers up to eight weeks’ job-protected leave for the purpose of attending to a loved one who has become gravely ill or is dying. This leave is available even if you apply for federal compassionate care benefits. Manitoba also offers a family leave of up to eight weeks within a twenty-six-week period.

Another option is to find out whether you’re eligible for any tax deductions due to your caregiver status. If you check the Canada Revenue Agency, you may find that you qualify for income tax benefits as a caregiver.

Caring for the Caregiver

No matter how busy you are, schedule time to look after yourself. Remember to nourish your body and spirit. Don’t disregard the physical toll that caregiving takes on your body. By making time to look after your own physical health you will find the strength to carry on, and will be in a better frame of mind to deal with the challenges.

Eat Properly
As caregivers we are often so involved in looking after others that we forget to eat. This is especially true during times of crisis. Try to start the day with a good breakfast. Time goes by quickly, so be conscious of your body when it tells you you’re hungry. Get in the habit of carrying snacks and water with you. Choose healthy foods to help sustain your energy.

Sleep Well
Make sure you get enough sleep, which will strengthen your immune system and help you to think clearly in order to make wise decisions. Develop good sleep habits. Try to keep a regular bedtime and develop a relaxing bedtime routine. By identifying this time for yourself, you prepare your body for rest and quiet your mind for sleep.

Exercise
Exercise helps re-energize your body and makes you feel that you can do more. It can help you prepare for the day, or help you relax in the evening. If you’re not used to exercise, sign up for a class to get you motivated. This will also prompt you to take time for yourself. Check at your workplace to see if they have lunchtime fitness programs or physical fitness reimbursement benefits. Exercise will give you a sense of self-confidence and accomplishment that will carry through to your caregiving.

Find Ways to Relax
Relaxing can help you refocus. It can dissolve feelings of anger and frustration and allow you to come back to a problem with a fresh outlook. It can also provide you with time to decompress. Developing techniques to relax doesn’t necessarily require large amounts of time away from your responsibilities. Relaxing can be as simple as escaping to a bath with a good book, doing breathing exercises, or practising a hobby you enjoy. You can also attend classes to learn relaxation techniques or meditation. And check with your workplace to see if you are covered for therapeutic massages.

Nourish Your Spirit
Just as your body needs nourishing, so do your mind and spirit. Opening your spirit to feelings of hope and renewal allows you to feel replenished. Spend time with family and friends; it will give you the opportunity to focus on something other than your parents. Don’t hold in your feelings – confide in a friend or family member who can provide emotional support. Actively adopt a more positive outlook by reading books with encouraging messages, listening to uplifting music or looking for humour in daily events. Laughter can help you get through the difficult times. Do something you enjoy even if it’s just a couple of minutes in the day. Focus on the present, as it’s easy to start worrying about the future and questioning past decisions.

Be Confident
Caregiving involves many decisions, from small ones such as grocery shopping to larger ones such as where your parents should live. It’s easy to second-guess yourself and to struggle with these decisions. During these times remind yourself that you know your parents better than strangers. If your parents have given you power of attorney, they have faith and trust in your ability to makes decisions for them.

Try not to take the reactions of your parents personally during stressful times, especially if their behaviours are related to an illness, or because they are simply not feeling like themselves. Recognize that your parents’ anger or other negative reactions may be a result of fear and confusion. Have empathy for them.

Avoid Burnout
Looking after your parents over an extended period of time can be physically and emotionally draining. As a caregiver you may feel that your life is no longer your own and be overwhelmed by the responsibility. If you are feeling angry all the time, alone and isolated, and experiencing moments of anxiety and fear, you might be reaching the burnout stage. If these feelings are severe you may want to seek professional counselling, but there are also many small ways in which you can avoid burnout.

WAYS TO AVOID BURNOUT
• Identify signs of stress early, before they become serious (sleep difficulties, headaches, anger and anxiety).
• Don’t suppress your feelings; find a confidant.
• Set realistic goals in order to manage your responsibilities.
• Set aside time for yourself, even if it’s only an hour or so per day.
• Join a caregiver support group to share your feelings, and obtain tips and advice, resources, coping tools and useful contacts.
• Don’t be afraid to talk about your role as caregiver to friends and colleagues.
• Take advantage of respite care, either formal or through family members.
• Do not feel guilty when you can’t do everything.
• If your feelings are severe, talk to a professional counsellor, social worker or psychologist.

Find Support
As a caregiver you should have a support system in place. You need to know that you have people you can rely on to help you get through the difficult times and decisions. Don’t isolate yourself. Maintain relationships with family and friends, and make an effort to keep up with your network of friends who are not directly involved in the situation. These friends can give you some relief and can listen without judgment. Others more distant from the experience may also provide different perspectives on what you are going through.

There are also various types of support, including one-on-one counselling, group counselling, workshops and seminars. These may be offered through community centres, not-for-profit societies and religious groups in your area. There are also Web-based support networks. These groups discuss topics specifically related to caregiving. You can contact them individually to determine what they offer and which would be best for you.

Arrange Respite Care
Sometimes as a caregiver you need a structured and scheduled break away from your parents. Feelings such as anger and frustration will only increase if you are exhausted and don’t take time to recharge. You will need to acknowledge when you need this relief. Do not feel guilty when taking some time for yourself.

Respite care is provided when someone else takes on the caregiver role so that you can take time away from your parents. This care may be provided by family and friends, or more formally by agencies and facilities. You may need to have someone take on your role temporarily for short time periods, a couple of hours a day, or, if you are going on a vacation, for an extended period.

Various support agencies offer respite care, including the Canadian Red Cross and the Victoria Order of Nurses. These agencies can send someone into your home to give you a break. You can also look into senior day programs for your parents.

Respite care is also offered through retirement homes and long-term care homes, depending on your parents’ required level of care. Your parents can stay for short or extended periods of time. Some homes have rooms that are specifically allocated for respite care, where your parents can stay for a short time while you are away or just to give you a break. There is a fee and the rate is usually different than the regular accommodation rate. The facility can provide further information about the types of care offered and the fees.

When you cannot physically and/or emotionally provide further care for your parents, you may have to turn the caregiving role over to another member of the family. You may even need to allow professionals to step in and take over the responsibilities. If this occurs, you may experience feelings of guilt and sadness, but even if you are no longer the primary caregiver for your parents, there are still opportunities for you to remain involved.

The NATO Advanced Studies Institute series "Targeting of Drugs" was originated in 1981. It is now a major international forum, held every two years in Cape Sounion, Greece, in which the present and the future of this important area of research in drug delivery is discussed in great depth. Previous ASIs of the series dealt with drug carriers of natural and synthetic origin, their interaction with the biological milieu, ways by which the latter influences such interaction, strategies by which milieu interference curtailing the function of drug carriers is circumvented and, more recently, with the application of drug carriers for the delivery of peptides and proteins. The present book contains the of the 7th NATO ASI "Targeting of Drugs: Advances in System Constructs", proceedings held in Cape Sounion during 24 June -5 July 1993. The familiar character of Kermit the Frog teaches young readers about the plight of young children who lack the basic human necessities and the efforts of the United Nations to provide such essentials as housing, water, food, and medical aid.

From Publishers Weekly
This eager-to-please picture book wins plaudits for good intentions, though unfortunately for little else. Executed in a style that could well be called "Muppet multicultural" (the critters appear in just about every skin color imaginable, including purple, green and blue), the work is dedicated to the memory of Audrey Hepburn and published "in cooperation with the United Nations" (a portion of the proceeds will help support various U.N. projects). The double-spread pages present a series of happy/sad contrasts that employ minimal text ("Every child needs food to eat") and cartoon-like illustrations to depict the world's haves and have-nots. Kermit the Frog narrates and appears on the "happy" pages, declaring what every child has a right to--food, clean water, clean air to breathe, a home, education. The bright borders of these scenes evoke various settings--Africa, the Australian Outback, India, Greece, the Tyrol--and contrast sharply with the drab, mud-colored "sad" pages ("But sometimes there isn't enough"). The book's motive--to open children's minds and hearts to the world's problems--is admirable; however, the commercial tone and simplistic format lack subtlety and depth. Ages 5-9.

From Kirkus Reviews
Nine statements outlining children's basic needs and how they often go unmet--e.g., ``Every child needs food to eat. But sometimes there isn't enough to go around.'' The accompanying art depicts Kermit the Frog as narrator and features Sesame Street- style characters in many colors (blue, purple, pink, green). But while the characters are in a cartoon style, they express real emotions, and their settings are composed of realistic elements: a smoke-spewing city where the air is too dirty to breathe, an orderly classroom, an ineffective shelter in a rainstorm, a battlefield with shattered household goods (including a toy bear and the wounded in the background silhouetted against yellow flames). The result is that the concepts are made immediately accessible but not trivialized. Images and motifs from many cultures appear in the illustrations and borders (a painting of Mount Fuji in a well-equipped hospital), implying that plenty and deprivation occur all over the world. A serious book, with appeal for a wide audience, that can do only good. (Picture book. 4-9) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Beautiful
By A Customer
This book was recommended in Harvey and Goudvis's book "Strategies That Work". What a beautiful book! It is so powerful in presenting these statements, yet the use of Muppet characters does not present a grotesque picture for young children. I've never seen a book impact students' thinking of the world in the way that this book does. Could great reviews like the ones published on your site possibly encourage the initial publisher to re-print this book once again? I believe every classroom teacher and parent should have a copy of this book as we continue to become a more global society.

An excellent introduction to complex humanitarian issues
By A Customer
I found this book to be a very effective intoroduction to complex humanitarian issues for use with young children. Concepts such as hunger, poverty, and religious persecution are presented in an honest but non-threatening manner. The illustrations, which rely upon Muppet characters familiar to most children from shows such as Sesame Street, ably and accurately depict the full implications of the straightforward, uncomplicated text without ever becoming too emotionally difficult or overwhelming for preschoolers. This book is a valuable aid for any parent who is looking for help in introducing social issues to their children, whether they are presechool or school- age.

A Treasure
By A Customer
Here is a book written for any age - from preschool through adult. As a parent and a teacher, I can't recommend it enough to others. Thankfully, our local library has this book in circulation and my son chose it. Otherwise, I may have never known it existed. I just can't understand how this book escaped all the literary awards and media attention that other books have earned. Even worse, I find it hard to believe that it is out of print!!! My undergraduate degree was International Studies, and I know of no other children's book that teaches relevant concepts with such simplicity and sensitivity - in a way that any age can begin to appreciate.

Sexy Little Knits: Chic Designs to Knit and Crochet, by Ashley Paige

Knitting and crochet just got sexy. Celebrity swimsuit designer Ashley Paige reveals knit and crochet patterns forflirty, fabulous bikinis and more.

They’re flirty, they’re fun, they’re fresh. They’re gracing the pages of Elle, Seventeen, InStyle, and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, and they’ve been spotted on the hot bods of Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani. They’re the crochet and knit swimwear designs of Ashley Paige, and now they’re available in Sexy Little Knits, a collection of twenty-four patterns for chic summer pieces—from swimwear and tanks to dresses and shorts.

Ashley’s most popular knit and crochet patterns combine sophisticated color and fun stitches with elegantly form-fitting shapes. This assortment of stylish knitwear is presented in three chapters:

“Peace, Love, and Bikinis” celebrates classic bikinis and one-piece swimsuits.

“Sunshine, Good Vibes” includes patterns for dresses, tank tops, miniskirts, and short-shorts.

“Cozy Homebodies” features slinky garments perfect for lounging, such as camisoles, bathrobes, and sleepwear.

Each pattern is accompanied by clear instructions and helpful suggestions for customizing these designs with fun trims, clever color choices, options for more (or less) coverage, and creative stitch possibilities. Lushly photographed by fashion favorite Yu Tsai, Sexy Little Knits makes it easy to create a whole summer wardrobe at home or on the beach.

From Publishers Weekly
The knitting phenomenon takes a summer beach vacation in Paige's first book. Blurbed as "knits that melt onto your body" by Paige's archetype customer, Carmen Electra, Paige provides patterns for one teeny-tiny bikini after another, barely there in lush, full-color photos. Paige offers three chapters: the self-explanatory "Peace, Love & Bikinis;" "Sunshine, Good Vibes" with "Terry Short-shorts" and the "Little Mermaid Strapless Top;" and a collection of sexy evening and lounge wear like the "Sexpot Cami" in the "Cozy Homebodies" chapter. The drawbacks to Paige's approach are worth considering: "Some of the recommended yarns are not ocean-, pool-, or hot tub-proof," Paige advises. Sizes go no larger than about a women's 8, and knitters who have someone slim enough to qualify should keep in mind that Paige's definition of "sexy" almost always means lots of skin, with very little bits of strategically placed knitting. Beginners beware: there aren't any knitting how-tos here, just clearly laid out patterns accompanied by succinct knitting instructions. PHOTOS

Wonderfully splendid!
By Fiber Mage
This book features very sexy, wonderful knit and crochet patterns for all women of all sizes! I began crocheting right after I paged through the book! I want to make almost everything in it!! If you are an adult female looking (or even a cross dressing man) to exude your sexuality and turn heads, this is the book to do it with! The woman who designed and created these patterns is a fashion diva (in my humble opinion, of course) who should definitely keep designing all things glamourous and sexy!

Five stars because the patterns are for fitted, shaped, and structured garments that conform to a woman's curves. If you want to knit attractive lingerie and swimsuits, then you should start with this book!

Genuinely sexy designs include tiny but intriguing bikinis, an angora teddy, extraordinarily brief short-shorts, see-through beach coverups and tops, a strapless elasticized tank top, a sparkly halter "disco" top with see-through ladder rib body, and a short and cuddly chenille bathrobe. Several designs, including a rather tame striped sweater dress and a halter sundress sprinkled with eyelet hearts, seem modest enough for ordinary casual wear.

Edited out of annoyance..... ONE STAR IS TOO MUCH
By Cikk
I have tried to make a couple of things from this book, and must say that the instructions were hard to follow in those particular cases, and for one item, that is the bikini in fixation, the gauge was TOTALLY impossible to get. I wrote to the publishers asking about corrections a couple of times, and was completely ignored. I am seriously annoyed, and will NEVER EVER buy a book by this author again.

Old review.....
I have to echo the previous reviewer (Bronwyn) - I'll probably just make the tank tops from this book - and the net sweater - oh, and the cute little top from the cover. I knew what to expect from having read the blurb, but ordered it anyway even though I knew I would never wear a knitted bikini.... because I wanted something DIFFERENT. Some of the designs are way too bare for me, but it's fun to have something completely different. And I must say that they are really not vulgar. To wear the bikinis, you need to have an amazing figure, and to live on a beach - but I can see the bikini tops as little tops under transparent or gauzy tops - much cuter than either of my two usual options - boring skin coloured bra or obvious pretty bra a la Carrie Bradshaw.

I think it's a little bit unfair to criticise a book for living up to its name and cover.

Enough: The Phony Leaders, Dead-End Movements, and Culture of Failure That Are Undermining Black America--and What We Can Do About ItBy

Half a century after brave Americans took to the streets to raise the bar of opportunity for all races, Juan Williams writes that too many black Americans are in crisis—caught in a twisted hip-hop culture, dropping out of school, ending up in jail, having babies when they are not ready to be parents, and falling to the bottom in twenty-first-century global economic competition.

In Enough, Juan Williams issues a lucid, impassioned clarion call to do the right thing now, before we travel so far off the glorious path set by generations of civil rights heroes that there can be no more reaching back to offer a hand and rescue those being left behind.

Inspired by Bill Cosby’s now famous speech at the NAACP gala celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Brown decision integrating schools, Williams makes the case that while there is still racism, it is way past time for black Americans to open their eyes to the “culture of failure” that exists within their community. He raises the banner of proud black traditional values—self-help, strong families, and belief in God—that sustained black people through generations of oppression and flowered in the exhilarating promise of the modern civil rights movement. Williams asks what happened to keeping our eyes on the prize by proving the case for equality with black excellence and achievement.

He takes particular aim at prominent black leaders—from Al Sharpton to Jesse Jackson to Marion Barry. Williams exposes the call for reparations as an act of futility, a detour into self-pity; he condemns the “Stop Snitching” campaign as nothing more than a surrender to criminals; and he decries the glorification of materialism, misogyny, and murder as a corruption of a rich black culture, a tragic turn into pornographic excess that is hurting young black minds, especially among the poor.

Reinforcing his incisive observations with solid research and alarming statistical data, Williams offers a concrete plan for overcoming the obstacles that now stand in the way of African Americans’ full participation in the nation’s freedom and prosperity. Certain to be widely discussed and vehemently debated, Enough is a bold, perceptive, solution-based look at African American life, culture, and politics today.

From Publishers Weekly
When Bill Cosby addressed a 50th-anniversary celebration of Brown v. Board of Education, he created a major controversy with seemingly inoffensive counsel ("begin with getting a high school education, not having children until one is twenty-one and married, working hard at any job, and being good parents"). Building from Cosby's speech, NPR/Fox journalist Williams offers his ballast to Cosby's position. Williams starts with the question, "Why are so many black Americans, people born inside the gates of American opportunity, still living as if they were locked out from all America has to offer?" His answers include the debacle of big-city politics under self-serving black politicians; reparations as "a divisive dead-end idea"; the parlous state of city schools "under the alliance between the civil rights leaders and the teachers' unions"; and the transformation of rap from "its willingness to confront establishment and stereotypes" to "America's late-night masturbatory fantasy." A sense of the erosion of "the high moral standing of civil rights" underlies Cosby's anguish and Williams's anger. Politically interested readers of a mildly conservative bent will find this book sheer dynamite. (Aug.)

Review
Advance Praise for Enough

“Written in the tradition of DuBois and King, Enough is an impressively powerful and courageous book. Williams delivers a blunt and bracing challenge to black America.” —David J. Garrow, author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning Bearing the Cross and Senior Fellow at Cambridge University

“A courageous and much-needed primer on race relations in America today.” —Thomas Sowell, author of Black Rednecks and White Liberals and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution

“Enough is a breath of fresh air and a long overdue, critical insight into today’s stereotypical nonsense that has unfortunately been passing as the new black culture.” —Donna Brazile, political commentator for CNN and former campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000

“Juan Williams has, through Bill Cosby, spoken for the quiet majority of African Americans who desperately look for some voice to articulate what they know is truth. . . . I highly recommend Enough to those who are really interested in knowing our nation’s history, and specifically the odyssey of African Americans in this country.” —Douglas Wilder, mayor of Richmond, Virginia, and former governor of Virginia

“Juan Williams isn’t afraid to give Cosby his props, showing us that a lot of what people call black conservatism is plain common sense.” —John McWhorter, author of Winning the Race: Beyond the Crisis in Black America

Great ideas, but needs footnotes
By Andre M.
I greeted this book with eager anticipation. As a concerned African-American who is SICK of the R. Kellys, Marion Barrys, and Mike Tysons bamboozling Black folks into thinking they are martyrs instead of the fools that they are who got what they deserved from their own stupidity and of the ills stated on the cover (as well as Michael Eric Dyson deliberately and dishonestly misrepresenting Bill Cosby's message of self-reliance for cheap fame and more buck$), I expected a lot from this book from a person who feels the need as I do to STOP the self destruction.

Juan Williams talks about some of these ills in this book, but stays mainly to the futility of reparations and the defense of Bill Cosby.

The latter is excellent, but I think the Cos can (and should) speak for himself and write his own book (or put out DVDs of his recent town hall meeetings) to get his point to the public.

He (Williams) mentions some interesting incidents involving chicanery from Rep. Maxine Waters and Al Sharpton. This is interesting, but I wished Williams would have added footnotes to this and other material in the book for verification.

With that said about the presentation, I agree FULLY with the message of this book, which is the necessity for self-examination in Black America to stop the self-destruction, as well as dealing with external issues of the inequalities that remain. In short, we need some Booker T. along with the W.E.B.

I'd give it 5 for content, but 4 for presentation.

And to Dr. Cosby and Mr. Williams, I conclude with this-

"A third danger is timidity. Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality of those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change. Aristotle tells us that "At the Olympic games it is not the finest and the strongest men who are crowned, but they who enter the lists.... So too in the life of the honorable and the good it is they who act rightly who win the prize." I believe that in this generation those with the courage to enter the moral conflict will find themselves with companions in every corner of the world."

Robert F. Kennedy "Day of Affirmation" speech, June 6, 1966.

Count me in as one of the companions.

Speechless
By Beverly
I am utterly speechless! Juan Williams has taken the words right out of my mouth and somebody has finally answered the question that continues to plague my consciousness: "Where are the leaders?" and "Why isn't the black commumity banding together?" Too many have criticized Bill-- Cosby of ALL people. The man not only speaks the truth, he puts his money where his mouth is!! Finally, "Enough" champions the cause and makes us face the tough questions. This is one book that should be required reading in schools and I, for one, feel that the discussion started by Cosby and others is long overdue! BRAVO!

This book should facilitate more dialogue
By Ivory Johnson
Whether you find Juan Williams' arguments insulting or accurate, they are painful. The poorest of African-Americans are in a state of turmoil and he points out that the current strategy has ceased to yield results. He is not always eloquent in his delivery; in fact, you can hear the pain &/or disgust for what has transpired since Brown v. Board of Education. His interests are aligned with everyone in the black community, that the self serving interests of our so-called black leaders, the lack of education, the rate at which we go to prison, the break down of the family, the negative culture of hip-hop and other factors wreak horrible long-term consequences.

He nevertheless points out that racism is still amongst us and that the remnants of slavery have had lasting affects on our collective psyche. I would have liked to see bolder solutions, such as sending our top high school basketball players to HBCUs to generate money for our community, in addition to his conservative message to get married and stay in school. It's about time somebody came to the defense of Bill Cosby, who has committed more time and money to help his people than many of the pundits and false prophets who now point fingers. I have already recommended this book to all of my friends.

The B List: The National Society of Film Critics on the Low-Budget Beauties, Genre-Bending Mavericks, and Cult Classics We LoveFrom Da

What kind of collection could possibly find common ground among The Son of Kong, Platoon, and Pink Flamingos? What kind of fevered minds could conceive of such a list? What are the unheard-of qualities that tie them all together?

The answers: This book. The National Society of Film Critics. And the far-reaching enticements of the B movie itself.

Once the B movie was the Hollywood stepchild, the underbelly of the double feature. Today it is a more inclusive category, embracing films that fall outside the mainstream by dint of their budgets, their visions, their grit, and occasionally—sometimes essentially—their lack of what the culture cops call “good taste.”

The films in The B List are offbeat, unpredictable, and decidedly idiosyncratic. And that’s why we love them.

From Publishers Weekly
In this collection of essays by members of the National Society of Film Critics, the "B movie" is defined, classically, as "the Hollywood stepchild, the underbelly of the double feature." What B movies have become is a question the book answers only partially-movie fans will certainly debate whether newer films like Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs actually deserve a place next to proven genre classics like Gun Crazy and Crime Wave. Among dozens of pieces, highlights include Charles Taylor's appreciation of 1967's Point Blank and its embattled director, John Boorman, who mixed French New Wave styling and pulp-novel nihilism to inspirational effect (he also discusses Mel Gibson's remake and Steven Soderbergh's open tribute in The Limey). Roger Ebert's knowledgeable contributions don't disappoint; having himself penned the absurd B classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, he champions outliers Peeping Tom, May and Pink Flamingos. Rob Nelson includes the gonzo 1989 Nicolas Cage film Vampire's Kiss, for which the actor ate a live cockroach on-screen. Other titles include Detour, The Conversation, Vanishing Point, Videodrome, Eraserhead and last year's Grindhouse; though the collection's breadth undermines any attempt to pin down the modern B picture, these brief essays celebrate well the reckless streak that runs through Hollywood.

Review
Editors Guild
“A tome that will set nicely on the shelf beside your movie collection and provide rewarding reading as a supplement to the film viewing experience.”

Kirkus Reviews, Reference Special Issue, 2008
“Downright fun…Diversity can be found here aplenty, with fan favorites like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Reservoir Dogs, to stalwarts like The Son of Kong. They’ve also included some questionable picks like The Rage: Carrie 2 that will likely spark debate among film enthusiasts. The surprises, however, are the beauty of The B List.”

Augusta Metro Spirit, 10/15/08
“The National Society of Film Critics come together for an amazing array of sub-mainstream memory in The B List…The list of contributors is enough to make a movie fan’s mouth water…Some of the most knowledgeable people in the movie field provide an outstanding collection of memories, opinions, and even analysis…The writers in this volume offer an expansive view of where the film world has been and where it seems to go when the mainstream isn’t quite ready…Collected with an intricate knowledge of B-movie production and complete with viewer guides and arguments for each of the movies selected, The B List is a welcome companion to the book collection of any movie fan who sometimes steps beyond the simplicity of the mainstream theater.”

Total Film, November 2008
“A few questionable choices in the National Society of Film Critics’ round-up of B-movie ‘beauties,’ but they’re argued with authority and panache. Besides, it doesn’t hurt to have a couple of curveballs alongside all the usual cult suspects.”

Filmbill, October 2008
“Perhaps The B List is at its best when it makes a real genre film like The Rage: Carrie 2 seem legitimate, while showing that a cult classic like Pink Flamingos may not be as good as its reputation might suggest. Such are the delights of this collection, which truly offers something for everyone.”

Santa Fe New Mexican, 10/10/08
“[An] entertaining compilation of essays.”

Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, 10/26/08
“The writing is generally good, often excellent. Editors David Sterritt and John Anderson have done a good job of selecting essayists with an interesting variety of viewpoints and styles…[A] worthwhile book.”

Baltimore City Paper, 10/29/08
“The book’s most compelling essays make you rethink old favorites or point you in the direction of movies that even those of us who grew up tethered to our VCRs may have missed…If you’re looking for a guide through film’s funkier tributaries, this is intellectual criticism written with the urgency of a fan juiced to share some odd object of infatuation with a world that likely missed it the first time around.”

Curled Up with a Good Book, 10/08
“One of the most quotable books I've read in a long time…[An] amusing and thought-inducing collection.”

The Associated Press, 11/7/08
“The literary version of having a movie-critic friend intent on convincing you that there's a movie of which you've never heard but must see, The B List offers up mostly irresistible essays by the National Society of Film Critics about their favorite guilty pleasures…These movies may never make "best-of" lists, but they're all memorable, and most essays convey the giddy pleasure involved in watching a movie that is engrossing even though it doesn't ostensibly matter…The book's broad scope adds to its charm…The strength of the book lies in the fact that even if readers never see the movies discussed, it is still fun to read about them. And many essays showcased here will either pique readers' interest or reacquaint them with forgotten favorites…I challenge anyone to finish it without a Netflix queue full of previously unheard of movies they're excited to check out.”

NPR.org’s “Blog of the Nation,” 10/20
“A delicious critical collection of these low-brow treats.”

Publishers Weekly, 11/10/08
“These brief essays celebrate well the reckless streak that runs through Hollywood.”

InfoDad.com, 11/13/08
“Fun for fans of films that, in most cases, never quite made the A list because they wouldn’t be caught dead there.”

BookPage, December 2008
“Reminds us why it’s OK to love movies that have never made a ’10 best’ list.”

Buffalo News, 11/23/08
“Much more fun, though, by far, is The B List, in which members of the National Society of Film Critics belie their organization’s stuffy title and rummage around in the glorious seamy cellars that all art forms need for growth and health…You’ve got a lot of very merry film critics in The B List celebrating with you the joys of cinematic junk—even if so much of it has a weird tendency to last so much longer than so much ‘respectable’ fare.”

Bookgasm.com
“The book makes some interesting arguments.”

GloriousNoise.com, 12/1/08
“[An] eclectically focused selection of essays…There is an abundance of good writing in The B List, writing about movies that you are familiar with and about movies that you may not have even heard about…The B List should be—to make a movie blurb-like crack at this—on your A List.”

“If you are a movie fan at all, you should definitely take a look…It's a nice tour through the bottom level of film history, looking for some gems that almost nobody has seen…The essays about these movies actually do force the reader to examine what may very well be a familiar movie in different ways than they have before…Readers will find many ideas for movies to rent the next time they are at the video store…An excellent collection of film commentary. The love for these movies shines through in almost every essay.”

Skyscraper, Winter 08
“An engaging, lively read for die-hard B movie fans or those interested in knowing what to watch for at local DVD rental stores or on late-night television.”

Magill Book Reviews
"With a good mixture of familiar and obscure titles, the critics provide acute observations...The essays are insightful and entertaining. The best make the writers' enthusiasms infectious."

Word blog, 12/29/08
"The films in The B List are offbeat, unpredictable, and decidedly idiosyncratic. That's why we love them. That's why we love this book. A great collection of essays."

Bitch, 1/09
“Cover[s] a diverse set of films…Offers the cinephile a pleasant enough way to while away a few hours…May even alert readers to movies they’ve missed.”

SLUG (Salt Lake Underground)
"A good read…It throws caution to the wind and zooms in on films whose conception, lurid upbringings and dubious character traits would drive most people away. This is a fantastic resource for cult film buffs the world over.”

Atlanta Daily Report, 12/19/08
“There are some terrific pieces by all kinds of movie critics you’ve heard about, usually writing about movies you’ve never heard about.”

Film International, Issue 38, 2009
“Books like this often bring out the best in film critics, and The B List brings out the best in many of the best film critics in America…[They] don’t snipe or sneer, show off or oversell: they simply make well-informed and well-founded appeals for us to (re)consider the lowbrow barnstormers they believe to be worthy of the remastering and revivals usually lavished on films by a Bergman, Renoir or Welles. The resultant essays are short, taut, punchy and impassioned, and fuelled by infectious enthusiasm for B movies of bravery, vitality and invention.”

Taking a walk on the wild side
By David Roy
Are you a fan of movies? Not just any movies, but those cult classics, such as Rocky Horror Picture Show, or the low-budget movies that are showcased in Grindhouse? If you are a movie fan at all, you should definitely take a look at a new book called The B List. Edited by David Sterritt and John Anderson, this book consists of a series of short essays on various films, B movies in which the authors find some value and quality. It's also a nice tour through the bottom level of film's history looking for some gems that almost nobody has seen.

The book is divided into a number of categories, from film noir to "neo-noir" to sci-fi classics and road movies and many more. Thus, we get an eclectic mix of movie recommendations (the only one that's really not a recommendation is Roger Ebert's essay on Pink Flamingos, which he originally did not give a rating to and explains that he did not because "stars seem not to apply. It should be considered not as a film but as a fact. Or perhaps as an object."). These are movies that, despite the fact that many have fallen by the wayside, the authors feel deserve recognition.

I've been a fan of Roger Ebert's for a long time, so it was a pleasure to see that he contributed five essays to the book. However, the rest of the entries in the book are also very good. As is usual with any book that has many contributors, some articles are better than others, but I can honestly say that there wasn't one that I found badly written. All of the authors are noted film critics, and all of them have presented thoughtful treatises on the pictures on question. Readers of The B List will find many ideas for movies to rent the next time they are at the video store.

However, you will have to do a lot of the research yourself. It's almost criminal that a book like this rarely mentions, and only in passing if it does, whether a movie is out on DVD or not. Many of the older movies might not be, and a notation would have been very helpful. The authors are singing the praises of these movies; you would think they would want to make it easier for the reader to find them so they can revel in the juicy filmic goodness as well. Sadly, you're on your own.

Despite this failing, The B List is an excellent collection of film commentary. The love for these movies shines through in almost every essay, and the writers do a good job of intriguing you into doing that search. So forget those big budget blockbusters for a moment, those "live-action" films that are more computer graphics than anything else. Take a walk through the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, take a gander at films that bend the genre just a little bit, or are made so cheaply that the quality of the story has to take you through it. Pick this book up, find something you might be interested in, and give it a try. I think you'll be glad you did.

Misleading Title for a Hodgepodge of Essays on (Mostly) Cult Classics
By A. Ross
It has to be said that the title of this latest compilation from the National Society of Film Critics is more than a little misleading. Pretty much every major dictionary defines the phrase "B Movie" in more or less the same terms: a low budget film, often of poor quality, originally made to accompany the main feature in a double billing. However, in the introduction to this collection of brief essays, the editors provide completely different definition: "Today, we assert in this volume, [the B Movie] is a more inclusive category, embracing films that fall out of the mainstream by dint of their budgets, their visions, their grit, and frequently...their lack of what the culture cops call 'good taste.'" This is a definition so vague and sweeping that one could fit almost any film under its umbrella, which renders it a totally meaningless. A more accurate title could be made by chopping off the front of the book's subtitle, leaving "Cult Classics We Love" -- although even that doesn't account for some of the non-cult movies discussed ("The Core" and "Platoon" being notable examples).

The book contains about sixty essays, only five of which appear to be exclusive to the book, with the rest having previously been published in various magazines and web outlets. The editors have tried gamely to group the essays into ten sections, some of which make sense (Film Noir, Neo-Noir, Science Fiction, Horror, Westerns) and some of which don't (Political Pictures, Cult Classics, Midnight Movies). I could have done without such attempts to categorize and would have been glad to take the movies in chronological order. This might allow the reader to trace some interesting cultural shifts along the way instead of finding the films shoehorned into preassigned categories. Almost all the obvious recent "cult" films are included (eg. Pink Flamingos, Rocky Horror, etc.), but even readers of the type who would be attracted to such a book will likely find plenty to add to their Netflix queue. (Personally, I've seen roughly 2/3 of the films covered in the essays.)

As with any book of this nature, the essays vary wildly in both tone and quality, from thoughtful and probing analysis to rah-rah fanboyisms. It has to be said that there are far too many essays that reveal the particulars of the plot. So, if you don't like spoilers, you're better off taking the table of contents as your viewing guide, and not reading about a film until you've seen it. Still, on the whole, a decent little mainstream introduction to some of American cinema's intriguing nooks and crannies.

Hollywood's Step-Children
By Douglas Doepke
B-movies of the studio era were like step children-- members of the family, yet few adults paid much attention to where they went or what they did. The result was usually unmemorable, just like what most kids do to pass the time. But sometimes the result, less cluttered by the do's and don'ts of conventional moviemaking, produced genuinely novel entertainment deemed too risky for broader audience appeal. Those are the hidden gems B-movie lovers treasure.

The book is a respectable addition to that library, especially for those developing an interest in our obscure movie past. Many of the standard gems are included, particularly the noirs--Out of the Past (1947), Gun Crazy (1949), Detour (1945), for example. However, several lesser known noirs like Crime Wave (1954) and the astonishingly cost-effective Murder by Contract (1958) also appear.

Now I confess to being something of a purist. B-movies typically played the bottom-half of double features in the 30's, 40's & 50's, were in black&white, and were nearly always products of the studio system. Those are the ones I treasure because they usually ran up against the dead hand of studio censorship, causing their makers to finesse as best they could. In the case of Gun Crazy, for example, the friction resulted in a fascinating series of images subtly blending two of censorship's biggest no-no's, sex and violence. The result is a riveting noir that comes closer to revealing our national obsessions than any A-production of the period. Put another way, if A-productions revealed what we were supposed to see, it was a B-movie like Gun Crazy that revealed what we sneakily wanted to see.

Anyway, the book expands beyond purist confines to include low-budgeters and cult films through the early 2000's, such as Reservoir Dogs (1992), Rocky Horror Show (1975), The Core (2003), et. al. Many of the newer ones I haven't seen; at the same time, the book shows me helpfully why I should. Most movie genres are covered, including musicals, politicals, Westerns, and weirds. Somehow, comedies got left out and I'm still wondering why. That durable farce from 1945, Up in Mabel's Room, would have been a good comedic place to start. Of course, which films are chosen for inclusion can always be second-guessed. For example, my all-time classic, DOA (1950), is left out-- but then, some classics are bound to be left out. On the other hand, whether an elaborate production like Platoon should be included-- as it is-- remains debatable. Nonetheless, the choices strike me on the whole as reasonable ones, perhaps not optimal, but at least reasonable.

Editors Sterritt and Anderson provide properly irreverant intro's to each section. The articles themselves from professional critics are by and large both entertaining and informative. However, readers looking for heavyweight or academic analytics will probably be disappointed. Most essays reflect a sprightly journalistic-style approach and run no more than 4 pages, hardly enough room for deep analysis. Still and all, most of the movies don't bear deep discussion--what, I wonder, would an iconographic interpretation of the cleverly cartoonish Big Bus (1976) read like. I shudder to think.

Anyway, the work stands as an informative little compendium, especially for those newly embarked on the glories of the B-movie essentials.
