A Sleepy Story

This book was a childhood favorite of mine and my younger brother. We would have it read to us over and over every night. Many times, I remember falling asleep in the middle. It has a flowing rhythym and tone. Now, my children enjoy the same story every night as they fall asleep and I tell them a story.

A security blanket in disguise

I can recite this book by heart. Seven years ago, my then-3 yr old son was hospitalized for three months at Boston Childrens' Hospital. The only way he would go to sleep is if I read "A Sleepy Story" and another book whose title escapes me. Surprisingly, instead of growing bored and despising the book, I grew to look forward to reading it as much as he did. It's very soothing with a rythym that is soporific yet interesting. The illustrations are good and there is gentle humor. My son is ten now, but sometimes when he's sick or frightened, he still asks me to read the book to him. I highly recommend it for ages newborn to school-age.

I use this book in my computer science class

I use this book to teach recursion in my introductory computer science class. We have "Computer Science Story Time", where we all sit in a circle and I read this book to college sophomores. It's a lot of fun. Interestingly, there is a mistake that the editors never caught: The animals don't fall asleep in quite the same order that the stories are told (corresponding to the stack frames being popped out of order). This just adds to the book's charm.
