A ferocious battle with the file-sharing company Napster saw the quartet attract the worst PR of their career. Meanwhile, communication breakdowns between James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Jason Newsted (who would leave the band in 2001) led to fierce internal arguments, as laid bare in the controversial documentary Some Kind of Monster.

Paul Brannigan and Ian Winwood are two of the world's foremost music writers. A contributor to Rolling Stone, Classic Rock, and Metal Hammer magazines, Brannigan is the author of the acclaimed This Is a Call: The Life and Times of Dave Grohl, while Winwood has written for Rolling Stone, The Guardian, Mojo, Kerrang!, and the BBC. Together, they authored the predecessor to this volume, Birth School Metallica Death: The Inside Story of Metallica (1981-1991). Both authors live in London.

Nothing "New", but Entertaining, Educated & Enjoyable!

I am a lifelong Metallica "Fan-Girl" since forever (I'm about the same age they are) although I admit I prefer their music from BEFORE "The Black Album". I've stuck with Metallica as a fan all these years in much the same way I've stayed friends with old mates from College...though we've all changed, and perhaps grown apart somewhat in our lifestyles and interests, I still care about them and am always curious what they are up to! So I was keen to read this book on the more recent "second half" of their career, as I have read pretty much everything else ever written on Metallica's 1980's incendiary thrash metal glory years already.
That being said...if you have seen "Some Kind of Monster" and have read any of the Classic Rock Magazine Metallica issues over the years, there is really no "new" or revelatory information here that will surprise or shock you. What IS here however is a very erudite, fun, intelligently written and cohesive story of Metallica's career since "The Black Album", with a touch of that dry British humor very much in the style of Mick Wall (if you haven't read HIS book, Enter Night, I highly recommend that one too!) So if you enjoy anything and everything Metallica, this book is a great addition to your collection. Enjoy it!

One of the better Metallica Bios I've read, and I'm a junkie for rock and entertainment bios. Can't wait to read the second book.
